EVO IX Q's???

Guys,

I'm just about to pull the Trigger on a New IX, beginning of August anyhow, and I have Test Drove Several already and been Lurking here for a few years....But before I go on I gotta say Wow what a CAR! I'm a 46 year old Classic American Muscle car nut, and have been in the Turbo Buick hobby since about '93, and NEVER thought I'd be buying an Import, But here's the FACTS:

1. 0 to 60 in 4.3 Seconds AND 1/4 Mile in 13.1/12.9 @ 104/105mph

2. LESS than $35,000 Brand NEW

Short of a $50,000 New Corvette is there Anything available thats Quicker?? Of COURSE the answer is NO Thats all I had to See Hear and Feel to make my decision, anyhow...On to the questions:

1. All the cars I test drove had a BOG while Launching, do you have to really come out at 4500rpm or above to get around this??

2. Shifting..I'm sure Motor Trend and all the other Mags were Granny shifting
when they got thier Low 13's, is a 12.90 or better just a Powershift away??

3. Fuel, does the IX PULL TIMING with lower than 93/94 Octane??

4. I'm really not into Modding, but whats the BASIC Upgrades that will get me a Few More Horses, and Knock a Few Tenths off the 1/4??

Thanks In Advance!!!

I'm pretty new to the forums but ill try to help out a bit...
1.I've only launched my car like twice but i did launch above 4.5k, didnt bog but I did smell a tad bit of clutch...
2.Im not sure if a stock ix has made it under 13's most are in the low 13's with good 60 ft times... It may be possible to get like a 12.99 but im not sure if its do able or if someones done it...
3.Not sure...I use 93 octance car runs great...
4.Turbo back Exhaust, boost controller and a flash or custom tune...most are getting around 320-330 whp with that...

I dont know much im still a newb, but i hope that helps...

They are running High 12's. Good luck with your purchase.

Warrtalon Jul 5, 2006 08:11 PM

1) Yes, 5k or higher in order to launch properly.
2) Several have hit 12.9s stock and at least one has hit 12.8. The IX itself is capable of a 12.7@107 with the right conditions and a good driver, but that's not with powershifting - just fast shifting.
3) No, 93 is not standard everywhere, so it's tuned to perform well on 91 and above. The stock tune is so rich that it doesn't really matter, plus the boost isn't maxed out.
4) Click on my sig - 60-70whp over stock for $1270 with the combo of mods MR06Evo just listed (TBE/MBC/Flash).

If you are going to get mods, get them from buschur. He sells staged upgrade kits for the EVO. Stage 1 gets you to 330hp, and it includes a flash. I think there are six stages total. Alll the way up to 550hp

Yah, thus my #4 - click on my sig.

1200 is cheap!

BTW Warrtalon you were saying these cars were meant for 91. Does this mean filling up with 94 is pointless?

sblvro Jul 6, 2006 07:18 AM

 wow they let you launch in all your test drives?

Most of the 40+ year olds in my area driving rally cars opt for the STi. The ride and road/wind noise seem to have been addressed pretty well in the 06's. You say your not really into modding so that might be the better route for you. I recommend that you drive an STi before you purchase an Evo because this car offers no refinement or comfort anywhere. Most older guys dont realize this until a few weeks later. If the Evo wasnt so damn responsive to mods, i would have gotten the STi. And $1200 for 330 whp is a deal in my book.

First off $1200 is NOT cheap when coming from the Turbo Buicks, when you can Modd a BONE STOCK Buick (Turbo T, TTA, etc.) and for $300 + Tires be in the LOW 12's on Race Gas...(Been there and Done That on FIVE Separate Buicks since 1992)....

And as far as the Ride, on my Extended Test Drives it was Fine, and from Everything I read the EVO IX is ~2 to 3tenths QUICKER than an STI, and for me it's ALL ABOUT THE LOW ET!!!!!!!!

^But for 1200 bucks, you'll be running low 12's with the Evo IX... on stock tires... on pump gas.

I didnt realize drag racing was purely your thing as this car wasnt designed for that nor the STi. I understand what your saying about modding your Buick but you cant compare modding an import to an american car. And you should also know that if you intend to drag the car frequently, you will be replacing the clutch soon and that will probably cost as much or more than $1200. These cars are expensive to maintain so its a good thing you are here asking these questions before you commit to buy.

11SECEVO Jul 6, 2006 08:40 AM

Thanks, and YES I'm mainly a Drag type racer, but Mid-Low 12's are Fine for me,
and yes I realize the Cluth is the weak point, almost like the Trans is the weak link in the Buicks, but at mid 12's or so and Granny Shifting I 'Should' get a lot of life out of the stocker...and replace it eventually.....
