I'm debating whether or not to get an Evo.
 

Ok help me out here guys...

I'm 19 and carless. I've never owned a car with stick but my friend has an RSX type S and I'm still learning how to drive it and so far It's been fun as hell and makes me want to buy a car with stick.

I've been researching a ton of cars lately and the only car that I like so far is the Evo. The only thing about it is the cost. It would cost me about 30,500-31,000 to buy an IX in the Orlando area. Well like I said I'm only 19 and right now I'm working a job that only pays me 7.25 an hour. With that said I only make like 200 bucks a week and that comes out to 800 a month. I have about 11k to put down on the payment which would leave me with about 20,000 to pay off making my monthly payment about 320 bucks a month give and take for about 60 months (5 Years).


Is there any other 18-19 year olds that are doing this same thing and it this too big of a payment for me each month? Not only that but Insurance is going to be a ***** and I don't know if I can afford it. Plus cell phone bill is 65 a month, rent is only going to cost me 150-200 a month when I move out but still that equals a payment of about 600 a month leaving 200 for food/gas.


I really want one of these cars but I just don't know if I can afford it...Should I just settle for a cheaper car or save up for this bad boy...what to do....

Are you nuts? No, you can't afford this car.

Do not do it. The car payment is the least of your worries . You have to factor in high insurance, more-frequent than normal maintinence, as well as other issues that demand your money in life. Wait until you get a better paying job and have more affordable insurance. Most kids in your age group end up selling because they cant afford it.

with a 11k downpayment, and if you get a good rate, sure, its possible, i doubt you will have other spending cash though~

Yea, definately not a new one. You could find an '03 for about 20 (sometimes even less), put your 11k down, and only make payments on 9k. That would seem like a better idea to me. Then it may be only about $100 a month/5 years (rough guess). But definately not a new one.

i agree, sometimes i think to myself, am i going to afford this car, and i pretty much net 650 a week ... then again im an alcoholic and i love booze

As someone who is definitely old enough to be your father, I'd recommend starting with a much more economical vehicle. It's a no-brainer. Not only the insurance is going to get you - the maintenance costs are higher for this vehicle, too, unless you do it all yourself.

Is he going to be able to afford to fix it when it breaks? Not on $800/month.

Yes I am 19, but i make $65 grand/year, and it is still a lot for me to spend. Insurance + my payment puts my Evo expenses at $1000/m w/o the gas, oil, mods, and wear and tear items. This car is very expensive.

Not only that, but your living expenses are going to be more like $1000/m, i have no idea where you got this $200-$300/m thing from. Rent here on a two bedroom apt is like $1200/m, split that by 2 and that is $600/m add cable and gas and electric, as well as food and toiletries; i'm at probably more then $1000/m. Not only that, but what about clothing, cell phone, etc?

Think about it, it isn't going to work.

Buy and S2000, they are like $16-$18k and you have $11k to put down, so your payments are going to be like $100/m. There ya go.

20k is going to cost you closer to 400 bucks a month with a good APR.
Insurance will be insane and the maintenance costs will kill you.

Try to get a job at a bank. They pay more. :)

Oh boy - just fuel can run $200 to $400 a month. I make 50k a year don't have to pay rent and the Evo is still a HUGE expense.

19 year olds making 65k a year? I need a new job...

I'll put it to you this way.. I make around 70,000 a year granted now I have a mortgage and a few other bills but I bought an Evo before I even bought my condo and I still felt like this car was expensive. You barely have enough to cover the actual car payment. You haven't calculated your age and insurance rates, the wear of tires, brakes, nor the cost of your 3,000 mobil 1 synthetic oil change. And do you really think you'll want to keep this car stock for 5 years.. ha ha ha.. Don't even get me started on mods. Simply put. save your money and pay for a car cash with that 11,000. As an evo owner I hate to advise you but in your situation if you like speed you're better off buying a srt4. You get just as many thrills without all the bills. Don't worry when you're older there will be much faster cars and I'm sure someone as studious as yourself will be easily able to afford cars at that point in your life. Or if you are that die hard about it. Simply save up more money till you get to about 15,000 or so and buy a used 2003 Evo that will probably sell for 18,000 or 19,000 in about a year.
