Time Attack evo's? 8 or 9?

Well i would like to start off and say hello, and also say that this forum you got here from what i have searched and read is very friendly and informational {thumbup}

so any ways my question is what type of evo is most often used for time attack the evo 8 or the 9? also i was wanting to know if i was upgrade the turbo should i stay with a size similar to the stock or does it matter? lol heck i would put the AMS GT42R Turbo Kit if it would work ok :p

but i am asking this because i have a tahoe and im planing on trading it in or privately selling it, to buy a evo 8 or 9

Thank you in advance :D

mostly u see evo 8s on time attack because they are cheaper, availability and more people already have them...as for the car they are almost identical for certain cosmetics and that the nine makes a little bit more power because of mivec.....as for a gt42 thats is an over kill for time attack and you will never see boost...many people have great results from their stock, green turbo and gt30s and 35rs. your turbo is based on your motor setup as you want to say in the rev to keep the boost up coming in and out of corners to make the most of your motor

Go with a 9 SE (no coicidence thats what I have :D). It has a few of the special MR doodads but with the noticably stronger 5-speed tranny. Also, being an 06 there will be more with lower milage. Try to get an unmodified or lightly modified model. This choice completely depends on your usage of the car. The above post makes a valid point that 8s are cheaper and more readily available and if you are going to strip it and race it, go with that. However, coming from a tahoe, I am assuming you will track AND daily drive the car? As such you are like me and the 9 SE is a nice choice.

As for the turbo question, just search around and gather information on the many different sizes (30r, 35r, 40r, 42r... there are many) types (like twinscroll and HTA) and manufacturers (ETS, Buschur, AMS, Full Race, etc....). You need to have a goal in mind with regards to torque, horsepower, power curve, and spool. Not to mention you need many supporting modifications to reach the power generated by a larger turbo. Oh and dont forget the huge money and time investment!

Nice to see you getting rid of a tahoe to get into a sweet evo though! Buy a 9 SE and get used to it and hit the track. For the love of God though, get some good brake fluid and pads before you go. Just two days ago my baby hit the track for the first time with stock brakes and it was bad! I am bad about using the search button but dont be afraid of it. You can find a lot of good information by reading the random posts. You might answer a question you didnt know you had.

Good luck with the purchase and enjoy your evo!

Anytime, and the only way Id steer away from the 5-sp tranny to the 6 with a DD is if you do a LOT of highway driving. I have the Buschur pipe (nice and loud) and my two hour treks are a bit... annoying running at 3500+ rpm. Doesnt deter me much though I am getting a test pipe tomorrow  and the 5-sp is a DEFINITE with the track in mind. Again good luck with the purchase and welcome to the community!

8 all the way. Mivec is junk. all the fast evo are evo 8 and before.

I have an off topic question sorta, sorry. But if a 2005 EVO has enkei's for the stock wheels that means it's an evo 8 right? Thanx.

magyar86 Jun 6, 2008 12:01 AM

yea 05's are 8's. but they have ACD like the 9's with a 16g turbo and 10.5 hotside

evil_evo77 Jun 6, 2008 12:18 AM

thanks for all the info guys :). only one last thing can the 9 handle as much HP as the 8 can? because i know all the big HP evo's are 8's well at least most of them are.

Thank you again for helping a newb out :D

Yes the 9 can handle as much HP as the 8.

Yup they can. The only reason there are more big horsepower 8s than 9s is because they have been around longer (2003 vs 2006). The 2006 evo 9 also has a larger turbine housing as well as the 10.5 hotside that the 2005 8 has. Mivec is not junk, it improves horsepower as well as fuel milage, though both of those are in limited capacities. The 9 will actually be able to make more horsepower than an 8 assuming identical mods.

Watch out for the VIII vs IX battle :shoot:

I think you will be happy with either one.
