I'm looking at buying an Evo but need advice!

I am looking at buying an Evo for sale down the road from me.

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
71,000 miles
$13,800

Cosmetic defects: Momo steering wheel has the leather almost coming off on the top right side, carbon fiber blade has the clear-coat peeling a little, and the black paint is peeling a little on the hood vent under the mesh.

Aftermarket: Greddy exhaust; HKS intake; blowoff valve (it's metalic purple, not sure what brand); A-pillar with 3 pods; turbo timer; (possibly other stuff but that's all I noticed)

Now this is the part I need advice on. It has nitrous in the trunk (not sure what type or size, haven't actually seen it yet myself) and the check engine light is on. The saleswoman told me it's because the nitrous and turbo timer are hooked up to it. Does that sound right to you guys who have hooked up spray before?

Can I tell from the bottle in the trunk what size shot the previous owner was running? And if so, could someone tell me what would be okay to run on this car stock so I know if he might have hurt it or not. I'm planning on seeing if they will let me take those two things out to see if that really is the reason for the light, and then if there is in fact something wrong with it, I would take it back or just not buy it.

So if I can return it upon finding out there's something wrong with it, Do you think it's worth it at that price? Thank you!

I'm almost certain it has a rebuilt title????

And most ppl with evo's don't run NOS but chances are he beat the crap out of it.

nitrous means get the fawk away from the car.. search the evom classifieds here and find a good condition well maintained car..

SR20S13 Jan 29, 2009 03:45 PM

doesnt sound like a good idea. the turbo timer has no affect on the cel. strait nitrous may be ok with a small shot like 30-40 on the stock ecu tune.

get the code. but personally i'd pass or offer way less

ev0lution9 Jan 29, 2009 03:47 PM

yeah definitely stay away from a car with that many cars and with nitrous you can find a much better car for a little more $ and ALOT less miles

jjm4life Jan 29, 2009 03:48 PM

stick to your chevy until you learn more about evos. and run away from that car.

boostincincy Jan 29, 2009 04:09 PM

find out who the owner is, and go call him an idiot for putting nitrous in an evo, then get on the classifieds here and find a better deal. 3-4k more, stretched out over a few years isn't much of an increase on a monthly payment, so.... yeah, don't do it.

Run far, far away.

dtrackstar Jan 29, 2009 06:57 PM

Don't get it. nitrous=bad. Plus a friend of mine picked up a clean 04 rs with 52k miles for 12500.

IMO I would def stay away from that car. It just sounds like trouble and most likely the previous owner beat the crap out of it. Even for that price you will just end up paying later. And do you know if it actually has nitrous or its its an intercooler sprayer?

paint peeling by hood vent is way normal stuff duder

If it has been used w/ NOS then I would highly steer clear of it bro. I mean the price is right and all but honestly I am sure its been beaten worse then a dead dog as a Pinayta

Keep looking

evo_tiago Jan 29, 2009 07:39 PM

Don't do it bro. can get a much better, well maintained car if you take your time.

Evo_Hustler Jan 29, 2009 08:08 PM

First make sure it really is nitrious because it can also be intercooler sprayer unit, but the check engine should not be on be cause of a turbo timer! Tell the dealer to run a diagnostic & check what it says on the reader. Also tell the dealer to run u a carfax/auto check report...

joowick Jan 29, 2009 08:17 PM

Don't overpay. That deal is terrible. With the way things are right now, you will find much better deals else where.

And like what everyone else is saying.... STAY AWAY!!!

burninrubb24 Jan 29, 2009 08:26 PM

yea.......no dont do it i wouldnt
