I bought someone else's headache
Well i picked up on 03 evo 8 with 49k miles and an extended warranty in August and have had terrible luck with it
It all started with me being rear ended which required a new bumper. There is transmission problem which is when ever i shift i hear a clunk noise so figured i would have that checked out while it was being fixed at the mitsu dealership. While it was at the dealership i learned that if anything in the car was not stock from mitsu (fluids) the warranty would be voided and it would cost me $1500 just for the shop to drop the tranny and look at it (not counting the parts it would cost me to fix it) I called the River Oaks Honda (place where i bought it from) and they said they would fix it regardless if the warranty covered it or not. Which brings me today, I was at the shop to change the oil and tranny fluid (River oaks is a 5 hour drive from where i live) all was going well until they finally told me some big problems. 1.The oil temp. sensor was not working and it was leaking oil in to the pan. (i forget the exact details) 2.They found metal shavings inside the oil pan. Which means that metal shavings were running through my engine, turbo, everything 3.They found more metal shavings when they were changing the tranny fluid. So im planing on making the trip from Ohio to Illinois soon and im starting a list on what to bring with me so far i have a screwdriver, and a quart of oil Anything thing i should bring with me? Any idea what be wrong with my car? and any opinioins or thoughts would help me right now. Im pretty frustrated and somewhat depressed right now but im going to try my best to stay in the evo game and here to. |
It was probably road raced and beatin to near death and then you came along and bought it. Happens all the time....

Yeah brig your whole tool box, a working cell phone, cash/credit card, flash light, and hopes/wishes.
Metal shavings isn't good. It could be a few things. Internals in the motor are grinding/not within spec. Turbo-there's lots of shaft play. The fins could be scrapping on the inner walls. I personally wouldn't make the trip as I can already see something going very badly. So is the transmission problem fixed now or what? |
Depends on the shavings? copper peices would be bearings. if it was driven long enough that way your turbo would end up getting popped too. as well as oil cooler etc. hope things turn out better.

nope the tranny is still clunking when ever i shift but the tranny fluid change has helped it a good bit

yup def, bring as many tools as you can and anything else that you might think you'll need, that sucks that you've encountered so many problems, I bought my evo with low miles and an old owner so I never had to experience this myself hope everything turns out ok, just keep at it and your evo will be in working condition in due time

Can you please describe this "clunking" noise you speak of?
And any kind of shavings is internal regaurdless. Anything internal failing isn't good. |
when i press the clutch slow or fast it clunks
moving out of 1st and in to 2nd, out of 2nd and in to 3rd, it clunks sorry if this isn't descriptive enough but its been a nerve racking day for me |
No no that's fine I'm just trying to help you diagnose what the problem might be. I hate the stealership and wouldn't EVER let them touch my ride. That's just me.
Does it slip at any given point? What clutch is in there? How long has it been doing this? Just trying to help you out without you spending any money that's not need to get it diagnosed by a so called specialist. |
about 2 weeks after i picked up it started clunking
it only slips on a cold start it been doing this for awhile now but i havent driven it a lot because of the accident The place where i bought it from was legit honda dealership. Thanks a lot for even hearing my problem out |
mine clunks also when I shift in low RPM, but I dont think it has anything to do with tranny as my tranny is new bushwacker, it also did it before the tranny upgrade. I am almost certain is the TC and may be a lack of smooth trancition. I really don't worry about it much. I run the Act XT performance disc clutch kit.

Metal shavings in the pan or on the drain plug? I think it's normal to have some sort of metal shaving on the drain plug(magnetic), I know I had some on my first fluid change and second change. I'm using Amsoil for 15k miles and it's been feeling really good this summer compared to the stock fluid.

the shaving were found in the oil pan and im still on the stock clutch

Transfer case may be going out. I was thinking it might be your clutch and it's very well possible.

the clutch is the next thing on the list after this whole metal shaving problem gets figured out
