The 2005 evo VIII's

Hey everyone,

I own a 2005 evo VIII SSL. I'm a little confused about the specs of the turbo. I know it's not the evo IX turbo, but doesn't it have the 10.5 hotside? I'm set at 24psi and want to bump it up to 26psi, but I don't want to stress the turbo out to bad. I think I have enough supporting mods, upper and lower I/c pipes, walbro fuel pump, IX bov, external o2 dump. TBE, and a tune. I think that's all.

Thanks for any/all advise

You need to take a little time to understand how these cars work. If the car is tuned for 24PSI, raising the boost won't necessarily help anything, but might hurt. Search and read before you screw up the car. Good luck.

How does asking for advice risk me screwing up my car? Obviously if it was bumped up to 26psi I would get a retune. That's why I'm asking if the turbo that's in there can safely handle 26psi. Your comment has no information regarding that.

bump

Typically, you don't see very many people running more than 24 psi on any 8 turbo because even at 24, it's pushing the limits of it's efficiency. Max pump gas on a IX turbo I've seen so far was 25.

by the way:
03-04 = 9.8 hotside, smaller compressor cover/wheel
05 = 10.5 hotside, smaller compressor cover/wheel
06 = 10.5 hotside, bigger compressor cover/wheel

You are looking at about a 10-15 hp jump at the wheel in capability going from the 03-04 to the 05, then another 10-15 hp going from the 05 to the 06.

2005 evo 8 turbo can handle way more than 26 psi... you can spike it to 30+ psi with e85... itll taper down after 6500 rpm though

If you're running 93 octane, 26 psi is doable. 91 octane I wouldn't recommend 26 psi.. too much knock, 91 sucks

Ah ok i see. Thanks guys. I may bump it up to 26psi since we do have 93 octane around here. I wish we had some more e85 stations around here. So bumping it up two pounds would require a retune? I know in the 3000gt we could usually bump it up from 12 up to 14 no problem. But thats a different ball game.:mitsu:

Back to square-1.

Honestly I your not going to help me understand my car, then don't bother posting in my thread. There's a reason I posted
It in the newbies section.

To answer your first question your turbo does have the 10.5 hotside. With a good tune you should be able to run 26psi with no issues. I spike to 26 psi (according to my gauge, not sensor verified) daily in my 05 VIII FWIW. The turbo has 100k on it and still spins great. {thumbup}

Awesome, I too daily mine so that's encouraging to hear. Looks like I'll be headed to the shop for a retune today
