Hey everyone, i'm new here

Hello all, this is my story
I’ve always wanted an evo from since I was kid, but never had the money to buy one. About 2 years ago I brought a 95 lancer GSR paid $1500 for it. It was a lot of fun @ 20psi J. About 8 months ago I was waisting time on ebay and came across an evo VII for sale ( I know, stupid place to looking at buying a car), anyway it was very cheap,( yes yes I know probably for a reason) so watched for a few days and it didn’t go up in price, so I spoke to the other half and got the all clear under one condition I have to sell the GSR, (your probably thinking were the F**k is he going with this, give it time) so I bided on it and won, oh boy I was over the moon, I just brought one of my favourite cars of all time, contacted buyer and he told me it just a rebuild cause it was burning oil, being a mechanic myself I was happy with that, booked plane tickets and flew to Melbourne, checked over the car and took it for test drive, very happy with it, paid for the car and drove it 3300kms north,

got home and changed the oil, noticed a metallic look to the oil, I’ve noticed that with some oils it can have look, and thought nothing else of it, sold the GSR to mate thinking all is good the evo, raced the car on the track a few time and loved it, I’ve been around quick cars most of my life put none of them handle like this car.

Anyways (I’ll get to the point) after I done another 2500km I changed the oil and filter again the oil wasn’t metallic anymore so know longer worried about it, one morning going to work I heard an odd noise, I slight knock in the top end, I’ve heard a similar noise before in other cars and it was caused by the bottom bearing failing and the piston hitting the head, I asked a few mates to have a listen and they thought it a lifter, I pulled it all apart up top and found nothing unusual, work got real busy for a few months and I didn’t have time to touch it, on weekend I pulled the sump off and found this….

Notice the bodgie repair were the thrust washer had spun,

well this caused the big end bearing to fail, and the piston were hittinh the head, ever so slightly, lucking i have good ears lol,

Well I’ve decided to build a new engine, i've ordered a Spool Imports 2.3l stroker with 86mm CP pistons, cometic head gasket acl race serious bearing and arp studs top and bottom, should be all here in a few days i hope :)
i'm not doing any head work atm( ie cams, manifold and turbo), just the 2.3l and a tune.
What sort of Hp wound i possibly be looking at with this engine? i 'm hoping for around 400hp atws,

I look forward to all your comments, and that is my story,

Cheers Tod

Welcome, and gratz on the ride!

Being a mechanic, I am curious as to why you would theorize a hung lifter if you found metallic flakes in the oil?
There would've been no cause to tear the upper rotating ass'y apart for this, as the culprit would've certainly been (as you found) lower end.
How much metal fragmentation did you find?

Since you've already ordered a new engine, finding this debris in the oil is a moot point now, but had you decided to just replace the bearings, there's no telling what else was scarred from the filings you found.
Good choice on replacing the entire thing!

As for the HP, I would suspect high 300's, but that's just a guess.
A dyno after install will tell the tale :)

thanks mate,

there was no flakes as such just a slight metellic shine, after the second oil change the oil was clean, and it done about 9000kms since i brought it with no noises,

yeah i knew it wasn't the top end when i heard the noise, i just wanted to make sure before i pulled the sump off.

i should of expected it cause the car was really cheap,

Lol, no worries bud.

Be sure to throw us some more pics/dyno slips on the new powerplant after you get set on the install :)
