When you're buying an Evo..

What do you look for? All stock? Certain mods, Condition, Mileage, Etc.

Piro Fyre Sep 2, 2012 09:51 PM

Condition would be my number one thing. Just overall, how well it's been taken care of by the previous owner, who did the mods to the car and if anything is ghetto rigged, etc.

Polish Stud Sep 2, 2012 10:04 PM

What do you mean ghetto rigged? And does mileage matter to you at all?

BlazinVIII Sep 2, 2012 10:05 PM

the first thing i do with any car is check the oil - it says a lot about the current owner

pitch black = poorly maintained and if the car is modded, it's probably driven hard too. bad oil + driven hard = walk away (IMO).

Would a stock over modded be more likely to have less problems?

Mods that were done very cheaply and very poorly. Like running cables for a gauge poorly or if he installed aftermarket seats but the rails move around a lot while sitting in it. Most of the time, it involves eBay parts. Or even if the bumper is held with zipties instead of bolts.

Mileage does matter but I've seen Evos run to 150k just fine. Heck, mine was at 139k before I took it apart and it was running strong. Of course, my compression test was low but it ran at 25psi just fine. It all depends on what you consider low miles to acceptable miles.

Clean title. Any body damage. Engine runs good (compression test, no leaks, no half ass DIY, etc.) I got mine low mileage 100% stock, but I don't mind if it has bolt on mods like intake exhaust.

Thanks for the link! Very very helpful I'd say

That is purely a preference sort of thing as each one comes with different options. Mostly just creature comforts. The Mr comes with a 6 speed better for daily driving but worse for builds of more than 400whp.

Polish Stud Sep 3, 2012 11:08 AM

Why is it worse for over 400whp? Is it because of the stock engine block?
