Newb: Mod'd Evo, but No Idea

I figured this is probably the best place to ask the question(s) because I am definitely in need of help. Before I drop the question(s), a little background as to the reasons of my heartache. Take into account that owning an Evo has always been a dream of mine and to own one is truly a blessing and also what now feels like a curse. Haha  Like some Evo owners in this community say, it is a love, hate relationship.

I have had my Evo VIII MR for roughly two years now and I feel like I sort of kicked myself in the butt for buying the car. Reason being is at the time when I bought the car, it came with some serious mods and was running on E-85. Now, I bought it from a mitsubishi dealership in Minnesota and the car did come with some work receipts describing the mods done to the car, which were nicely provided by the previous owner. When I got stationed in California, I got my car dyno'd at RRE (shout out to RRE for an awesome experience) and it was there that I learned that my car had a deleted MAF and was on speed density. Also, I felt like a real newb and definitely made it a lot harder for Rick, who dyno tuned my car, cause I had no idea what types of mods were done to the car when he asked. Instead, I provided him with all the work receipts given to me by the dealership and I felt bad cause he had to rummage through all the paperwork and figure things out. It was better than nothing, but to this day I still feel like an a**hole for doing that. That was in 2013.

In 2014 I left California and got stationed in Korea for a whole year. While I was in Korea, I had my parents watch over my car for me. They would do the typical start ups and cruise with the car once every two weeks.

Fast forward to now, I am currently stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas and looking to get another tune done to my car out here. Been looking at Evolution Dynamic in North Dallas area, but I don't want to go in sounding like an idiot or have to make this harder on the guys there. I also do not have the work receipts that were provided by the previous owner here with me due to my parents, who seems to have misplaced them while I was in Korea. Now I feel like I am right back to square one and will have to relive the heartache when I first got my car dyno'd at RRE.

What I do know about my car is that the motor has been rebuilt. It is also running on the stock ECU and still has the stock exhaust manifold. Everything else has pretty much been replaced with aftermarket parts. When I got the car dyno'd at RRE on 91, Rick (the guy who tuned my car) told me the stats to my car, but I seem to have brain dumped the information. I read somewhere that RRE sends you an email with the dyno stats, but I never received that email. Not too sure if I have to request it or they do it automatically. Also, Rick never told me what tuning program he used to tune my car. This is in no way me bashing on Rick or RRE because he did do an awesome job on my tune when I was in California.

My question is how can I go about finding out what types of mods has been done to the car? Can I just take it to a tune shop and ask them to take a look underneath the hood of the car and let me know what has been done? Going to a reputable tune shop is a lot of pressure in and of its own and I don't wanna give the wrong impression that I am just like a spoiled kid who just wants a fast car and not give two s*** about the car.

Now this question is for anyone who has had there car dyno'd or just tuned in general at tune shops; better yet, at RRE. Can I still be able to acquire my dyno stats or are they lost forever?

Sadly I do not have any friends or relatives who are familiar enough with Evos or after market mods to help me with my lack of car knowledge, let alone anybody with enough patience to help me out so I am turning to this community for help. I feel I just need a good direction and what to do cause a mod'd Evo is pretty overwhelming. I know this is probably gonna get a lot of flak from evo veterans and fans, but I would rather take the heat and get some answers rather than be afraid and risk putting the heat on my Evo. Just an fyi, I drive my Evo like a granny so rarely would I go WOT. I think my Evo hates me for it, but I love her too much to let her loose.  Any questions asked, I will do my best to answer and any advice or comment would be greatly appreciated! Also, if anyone would like me to provide pictures please let me know and I will be glad to do so.

P.S. This took me about 2 hours to write. :D

Are you still running E85? Also do you have any logging capability like Evoscan or ECUflash. I am not sure if RRE locks their tunes, but if not that would give you most of the info you need. Do you know if the internals are still stock or if it is a stroker or larger than 2.0L after the rebuild. Any idea what the old HP and boost was?

Your tuner is going to want to know what parts are on it that affect air, fuel, and of course the sensors. You already said stock ECM which is a good start. Here is a list to start with to fill out if you have a non stock one, and if so what kind.

Wideband gauge
Injectors (if e85, these wont be stock)
Fuel Pump (if e85, also not stock)
MAP Sensor (if speed density, not stock)
Boost Controller (very likely not stock)
Stock turbo?
Cams and cam gears
Exhaust (also likely not stock)
Intake and Intercooler (not all stock if speed density)

Start with those. If you dont have mfg tags post pictures and people here can help. For some parts like exhaust and intake just knowing the size should be sufficient. Once you know what you have record it somewhere. I have my entire car build up on my website (upshiftracing.com) which helps resale value a bunch also when people know what was done and if it was done right or not.

Thanks for the quick reply blockade35! I am currently not running on E85, just strictly 91. Also if I remember correctly, I believe I am running on 800 cc injectors. As for boost controller, I got RRE 3 port boost Solenoid installed the day I got my car tuned at RRE. I am gonna dig around my car a little more and start to see if I can pull maybe serial no. or maybe part names from everything else you're asking of me. Til then, here are the pictures and hopefully this can shine some light on my predicament.

-underneath engine
-between exhaust manifold and radiator
-front picture
-turbo comperssor side (where the intake goes to turbo)
-under car exhaust picture
-maybe a clip of the car idling

from what i can see looks like..
-maf delete
-ETS short route upper ic pipe with Tial BOV
-Spoolinup Coil on plug (COP) kit... looks like the DIY kit

Also, get your car to JMS Racing in San Antonio.

Sorry for the late reply. Things have been pretty hectic here with the whole tornado warning going on, but got some pics of what you have been asking for Bhsj13. Be posting them up soon. Also, I wanted to know the reason behind the idling clip? I am by no means against posting it, but can one determine the type of setup or mod depending on the idle sound?

Does JMS Racing specialize in Evo's? Also, a guy I met here has told me to take my car down to Houston and get it tuned at a shop called D3 Performance. San Antonio sounds a lot better since I would hate to make an 8 hour drive to Houston for a tune.

JMS racing is a reputable shop that has extensive experience in many forced induction platforms.

The video of the Evo idling will tell us if the Evo has cams or not. Since the Evo is an VIII if it has larger trim cams it will have a choppy idle on cold startup.

If you want us to do the work then make it easier. We need pictures of the front of the car without the bumper on. Also if you can uninstall your air intake and take a picture of the turbo we might be able to tell if you are still running a stock turbo or an aftermarket one.

Write stuff down and take notes!!!

Shame on you for forgetting the knowledge that someone took their time to tell you!!!
