New to Evo's

Hello veterans of this forum. I am here to learn about this car before purchasing one. So far, I have read the Newbie FAQ before introducing myself. I have never owned a AWD vehicle and I would like to pop my cherry with an Evo. I will be learning as much as I can about these cars, as I did with my IS300. I have owned her for 10 years and looking for a 2nd vehicle to have fun with.

One thing that caught my eye while looking in the for sale sections of the web. What keeps the price of used Evo VIII and IV up in the $20k range?

I am not new to forums and understand that google is my friend. If there is a thread out there for my question, please post a link so i can learn.

Here to stay, dont flame :fire:

Some pics of my IS300 when I first bought here til now

When I first purchased Tenacious in 2006

Bagged her back in 2009

Parted her out in 2011 to trade her in for another car. Was stock for 4 years

In 2015, started to mod her again. This is the most recent pic I have of her

Roof Rack is not for looks...

Im at 315k+ miles now, just no pic of it yet. Yup, original motor/tranny. Cars dont last without maintenance. I probably spent more on maintenance, than I have on mods alone. Paid 3x for this car over the 10 years I have owned her. Drive'm till the wheels fall off

Supply and demand. They only made those from 2003-2006 (at least for U.S. consumption), and they're really reliable platforms that make a lot of power and are really visceral. The Evo Xs handle better, but they were bigger, heavier and just a little less visceral. So naturally a lot of people tend to like the older ones, but they were available during a shorter period.

Thank You for the welcome post's.

I have done a quick search about Evo 8s and 9s. Looks like I will be going with an 8 for the price point at this time. I found out that 05+ has Mivec, but is there any difference between 03-04?

What I would like to know between 03 and 04 is, mechanical/electrical issues. Since 03 was the first year in the states, just not sure if some changes were fixed in 04.

FYI, not worried about aesthetics, since its not the selling point for me

Mechanically the 03 / 04 are identical as far as I know. The 05+, as you noted, has Mivec, plus the ACD diff (Evo 8 2005 & newer), larger turbo & a few other things

I see your plan, buying-in inexpensively & upgrading from there. I like that approach

Let us know if you have any other questions

Welcome.

You can either have a stock reliable family car or you can have a beast of a relaible car and still get groceries done.

Its safe to say the 4g63 is an incredible machine.

It's the 2006 (IX) that has MIVEC, not the 2005. It just had a slightly bigger turbo than the 2003-2004 and is rated at 276 hp and 286 lb-ft, up 5 hp and 13 lb-ft from the 2003-2004s.

Welcome! I just bought my first Evo VIII last week and am loving every minute of it. You won't regret it, take your time and wait for the right one. I was searching months for mine before I finally pulled the trigger.

That's the plan. Do you happen to know a link to find more info about the motor?

Happen to have a link to this info? I would like to know more about the difference between 8, 9, and 10.

Thanks

I can send you pics later this week (I've had a busy week). I paid $15K, 79K miles, one owner small dent in the hood and the driver side fender but besides that it seems to be good. I have noticed that you can find a 03 Evo for under $20k but the Evo IX will be more in the $20k+ range.
