i was gonna say that as well. i would go for a any year IX SE if it were just basic boltons and an VIII for a beast. I have an 03 and am in no way biased as I am only on boltons and would prefer a IX at this point. But all the money I've spent on the 8 is why i'm keeping her. The Mivec is what i would want in the future and am no way interested in the 411B.

I enjoy working on my '03 as its easy to pull a non-ACD transfer case off to service the clutch (which will go.. believe me).
I think the nicest evo is the '06 IX SE personally, but you can't go wrong with any year, really.
I've gotten to work on and drive basically ever year and trim Evo at autocross events around the northeast. I like the mechanical feel of the non-ACD, but the fastest in bolt-on form is the IX w/ MIVEC no doubt.
2003's and 2004's have transmissions with poor clearances, as when mine went to get rebuilt by sheptrans.com it needed basically everything to be replaced. The turbos are smaller, seats aren't as nice, etc. But you can get an Evo 8 03 or 04 cheap, and the cost savings is truly awesome, as you can make any Evo fast as heck!
Searching on these forums will answer all of your questions. I encourage you to do so.

I am dealing with a similar issue as the OP. I read a number of different opinions and everyone seems to be suggesting the IX. Everyone seems to be in agreement , spend more money, you get a better EVO (excluding the X).
But there are few posts explaining the driveability differences between the two (probably because few people own a VIII and a IX).
Is the mid range torque difference so big that you have to downshift in the VIII to pass ? If you floor from a say 40mph roll in 3ed will the IX pull a good car length or two?

I am, and will always be in love with the 1995 Evo III. Once I finish grad school it's gonna be me graduation present to myself. I guess with my background with DSM's (I have a 380 hp AWD Laser), having tons of know how and parts, I could make it into a great Sleeper/D.D. People would just think it was a riced out Mirage, lol.
