08 with 64000 miles. Just did a clutch and flywheel swap last weekend and had the timing chain stretch/cam gear missing teeth because of it around 62000 miles. Mods are in signature and the car is primarily used for daily (on highway) driving with traffic in the afternoons for roughly 15 miles. I occassionally go for spirited drives through the back roads. Car is not abused and I've been driving a stick since I was 16.

A word of caution to those who have yet to experience a timing chain issue: my car did not throw a fault code whatsoever until my chain actually hopped 2 teeth on my intake gear. On occassion I would see the triangle with the exclamation mark on my hud display. I attributed this to low brake fluid level after talking to a service tech from mitsu but upon more research believe this was the warning light for the chain stretch. Just be aware that if you see that symbol display with no further info it could be your timing chain. Have it inspected!

My 2 cents,

~Nate

Thanks Nate- that's good info. I'm a bit of a newb about timing chains and have never experienced catastrophic internal damage before. Can you tell me about any other symptoms indicative of a stretched/failing timing chain? Also, what happened when yours actually hopped 2 teeth?
Of course now I am paranoid.

After the chain hopped it threw a cam/crank misalignment fault (intake) I think P0016. Symptoms were a really rough idle after the event and a noticable engine derate. Ended up being about $2800 in damage which thankfully my extended warranty covered. I did get a free cam install out of it. Its really nothing to be paranoid about. Mitsu released another chain design around the time my problem happened. Just have your service tech inspect it for stretch or pick up a service manual and do it yourself. From what I've seen the majority of the timing chain issues occur around 60000 miles +/- 10000

Mine is an 08. Race only though, and with about 5K in miles. Chains ok as of last spring when we swapped the cams.

used 2008 GSR

Hey,

I recently purchased a used 2008 GSR. I purchased at 33k, and I'm up to 36k. No problems so far, nothing in the repair history as far as I know

2008 Evo X GSR

Timing chain jump off track/stretched, destroyed the gasket, whatever at 55750 miles....yea right before warranty exp

Stock except for Works drop-in filter. Mitsubishi fixed it with no hassle, put me in a rental Toyota Yaris until repairs were made.

Still on stock clutch, but i've been driving stick shift for years. No other major problems....well the paint, but that's another story.

Got mine in February 2008. I was one of the first to have it in my county. Did some minor mods, intake, exhaust, lower springs, 20mm spacers. No chain issue i drive it mildly, never tracked. Some aggressive speeds on highway, but never raced. My only problem i faced was my AC compressor gave out on me at around 47k my mechanic told me that is rare to have an AC go out this far in. Could of been defected from factory but it took this long to fail from the internal. As it was full of grinded metal dust in the compressor and lines. Other than that my evo's pretty solid. Just a brake change and a set of tires. My evo is now at 49k.

08

I bought mine with 40 miles on it, now it has around 40,000. I modded mine the first weekend I got it, launched it off a side road, busted all my aftermarket stuff up. I put all the stock stuff on and a tomei exhaust. Drove it across the country, no problems so far...knock on wood.

Still have my 08MR that is lightly modded. Only main problem I had with the car was the tranny didnt feel right from day 1. Brought it in about 3 months later to complain to dealer and they said problem was normal. So about a year later it needed to be replaced. After that everything has been peachy. It has about 32k on it atm and the tranny was replaced around 10k I think. Other than that, set of tires, brake pads, and a couple of air filters is all it took to keep her happy and me.

I have 2008 MR with 84000 miles.
Still all stock with just a Cobb AP tune.
I've been babying it and still runs like new
Haven't taken it to track or anything. Mostly highway miles.
