What direction should Mitsubishi focus on for the future?
Hyundai doesn't exactly have a perfect record, but they are doing quite well in the US.
I dont think Mitsubishi's auto operations will ever leave the United States. Their heavy industries and other sectors are still profitable, so they will probably let their auto division keep losing money.
They really need to improve their passenger car and SUV division and fire all of their designers. The fascia on the new Mitsubishis is horrendous. They need to put the Eclipse to pasture, and really focus on making the Galant a car that people want. They need a good high volume passenger car to push their sales.
Toyota's Camry has an amazing 268hp, is reasonably priced, and looks fantastic. Similar offerings by others such as the Mazda 6, Ford Fusion, Honda Civic, Hyundai Azera and others are much more appealing.
Mitsubishi's regular passenger cars are like the fat kid that gets picked last.

I think Mitsubishi does need to improve their image. The only way that I see them doing this is driving accross america through the most popular towns and doing closed demonstations where professional drivers drive the evos and the attendees can drive various misu cars. They should also show how long mitsubishi's last by just driving around the country until mitsu feels they have shown how tough their cars are.
I think the direction they should be headed in is the dirction of the new Oulander which, when it comes out, will have the most features out of all the mitsubishis. Mitsubishi needs to start using their sister company, Mitsubishi Electric for some of their gadgets. Mitsubishi electic is a huge market with a lot of products. they supply GM and XM Radio just to name a few.
Americans, for the most part, want as many features as they can get. Personally i hate them because its just one more thing to mess up. features do sell which means mitsubishi needs to step it up.
The galants are fat and bulky as well as the new eclipse. Make them slim and spoty but not to sporty because the majority that buy big cars are old people and they love their buicks not their mitsubishis.
NEW features on the Outlander
Third row seating
GPS Navigation system
6 speed transmission with paddle shifting technology
Fast Key technology
I think the paddle shifting is just like the sportronic shifting except at the wheel.
The fast key technology is that u dont need a key to open the door. you just go up to the car and open it as long as you have the fast key

Why? Because that is what they do best. So no more Lancer Ralliart Editions, no more Galants (unless we are talking VR4), no more Diamante, and no more SUVs. I know people are gonna say, those are the hottest markets, that is where Mitsubishi well make the most money. Well the fact remains that Mitsubishi simply isn't making a profit in those hot markets, it's losing money big time. Mitsubishi has never really ever made big profit in those Markets regardless. The only vehicles that really always seem to turn a profit (even if it's a small profit) is Mitsubishi performance cars.
For example the EVO, as of now is the ONLY Mitsubishi automobile actually making a profit for the company. Sadly the EVO is limited edition and doesn't make enough of a profit to really impact the company. Still the EVO has been a success for Mitsubishi, a success amongst many failures.
The Eclipse for a long time was the best selling sport sub compact. Out selling competition such as the Prelude, the Integra, MX-6, Probe, and Celica to name a few. Sales for the 3G Eclipse have slowed, but the legacy of the Eclipse for Mitsubishi has been a success.
The 3000GT was actually a success for Mitsubishi especially when compared to the last generations of the RX-7, 300ZX, and Supra. While so many talk about how great those cars were, they forget that the 3000GT outlasted all of them 1991-1999 (RX-7 1993-1995, 300ZX 1990-1996, and Supra 1994-1998). The 3000GT actually outsold the RX-7, 300ZX, and Supra combined in the 90s.
My point is that Mitsubishi should for now turn it's focus to the one area where it has consistently been successful and that is with performance. Performance cars is a smaller market and it would mean that Mitsubishi would have to downsize, but if it could save the company that would be great. Mitsubishi should become the Japanese equivelent of Porsche (just more affordable)
My suggestions are-
-Downsize and focus attention onto the area at which Mitsubishi has always been successful (Performance).
-Get rid of the Diamante, the SUVs, the economy cars, and the family version of the Galant.
-Re-introduce the Galant, but only in one version and that's the VR4 version. MIVEC Turbocharged V6/AWD/$30,000-$40,000/300HP+/5-Speed Automatic and 6-Speed Manual/Aggressive styling andawesome interior/Updated Interior/Competition- G35, 3 Series, and IS350
-Re-introduce the 3000GT (Most likely a new name). V8 Power/AWD/$40,000-$50,000/400HP+/6-Speed Manual/Aggresive styling/3400-3500Lbs/Competition- C6 Corvette and Porsche 911.
-Continue to build and improve the EVO

It wouldn't hurt Mitsubishi to hire a new styling staff. The Eclipse is downright hideous, and I think a lot of people got driven away to other makes/models when the AWD version of the Eclipse disappeared. The Galant isn't exactly pretty either, but it's not bad looking. Sure, now Mitsubishi has the Evo, but what about those who want a sporty coupe with something other than FWD? Not to mention, not everyone wants a manual. There are A LOT of people out there that would love to own an Evo but either don't know how to drive manual or simply don't want to. Not to mention, as many people that are turned on to the huge wing also hate it. The Evo RS is awesome, but again, there are people that would love to have a "stealth" Evo with some goodies but without the aggressive over-the-top looks (think "stealth" STI).
Hatchbacks are nice, and a lot of people like them. How about that Evo wagon?
At the same time, I think the best results will come from a restructuring.
