getting a Power FC

Guys,

i am not very familiar with this unit, i've seen guys with AEM and Autronics .. but i do like Apex-I as a brand and seem very reliable .. but i was just wondering how much of a pita it is to work and tune ? what is the pros / cons about this unit ? please, share your thoughts as i want to learn about this unit and hopefully be in my car soon.

ps. i dont plan to do alot of mods, but i also dont want to buy a bunch of gauges and sensors to read.

mods

272s cams, HKS D/P, UR test Pipe, Greddy Evo2 Exhaust, Walboro feul pump, HKS RS intake kit, Hallman Boost controller, Helix I/C piping, Custom Dynoflash

plans

Intercooler, Cam gears ( to smooth out the idle )

no Knock control on the apexi unit, so you must trust your tuner. Also it can only store one map, so if you plan on running race gas you would have to get it retuned. It does all the basics jobs great, no idle problems or cold start issues. To change the base map you need software that apexi does not provide, so it can only be tuned by apexi authorized dealers. Otherwise cheap, no extra features but bulletproof system.

How comfortable are you with using it or the AEM EMS? The instruction book is available on line. Is there a dealer in your area that can help you out or do it?

As to Kane's comments I believe that rotary performance can set you up for software that will enable you to program and store different maps.

Yes the software is called FC dataloggit. I would choose a standalone that my tuner is familiar with, but tuning is tuning no matter what system you use.

I currently run the d-jetro unit and I use to run a T-67 with no problems. I'm slowly going back to stock for my own reasons. If you are interested I will trade you for you stock ECU+MAF sensor + a little cash, pm me if interested.

well, from my understanding .. it seems from word of mouth that there is a cert tuner in my area by the name of RPM in queens/brooklyn area ... has anyone heard of them?

one map for me would be enough, b/c i dont track the car much and the only time i speed or kinda race would be letting it all hang out on the highway with some worth wild running cars .. but other sides from that .. i really dont track much or 1/4 or open track or even autoX ..

i am mainly looking for something that i can use on a daily basis and drive my car like a normal car on a daily basis.

ps. would i need to get a wide-band to read my AFR ?

I have a PowerFC D-Jetro with the Commander and recently gotten FC Datalogit. When tuned properly, it gives excellent driveability. The commander is nice because you can monitor many things that are going on at the same time. You have limited tuning capabilities with it also. Some would say that you could tune just about anything with it, but there are many parameters that you are unable to get to. The FC Datalogit box and software on the other hand allow you to delve as deep into the PowerFC as you are willing to go.

About the only thing that I would say is missing that would have been nice is for it to pull timing in the event of a serious knock event. You DO have knock sensing and can set the sensitivity for the alarm to go off, but if you ignore it, or don't see it, it's not going to do you a whole bunch of good.

The FC Datalogit interface is well put together and for someone with any kind of knowledge of standalones it would be easy to adjust settings to your hearts content. It would be a great idea to add a wideband o2 sensor that could interface directly with the FC Datalogit. This way you can log and adjust as you go.

Just my 02 cents. I'm happy with mine.

Tony

After reading your last post I would just get an ECU Buschur Flash and save the money and aggrag. Having experience currently witht the Apex system, the AEM EMS and a Utec system that is my advice especially since you have the stock turbo that Dave Buschur says in his recent post on the C&D thread that he would keep if he was running solely on 93 octane. I assume that since you do not want to change maps that you will be running on pump gas.

It is an excellent unit and a LOT easier to tune than AEM. MUCH faster to setup and run and with the datalogit is easy to change maps and run whatever map you want.

Am I correct to say that the CEL blinking is the alarm, and the sensitivity of detection can be adjusted?

Damn, had it occurred a couple of times I was WOT on track.

Looks fairly easy to use and is very simple to change maps. I just got mine Thursday.
