tuners using headphones

My tuner uses headphones to listen to knock when he tuned my car. This other shop that was suppose to tune my car dont use headphones or any knock link device.... is this unprofessional tuning?

Hello and no it sure is not unprofessional and more of a tuners choice. Another well known tuner on the forum that I know of uses these headphones called det cans. I also have personally used them from time to time. I tune many different management systems and makes and models and every engine has different knock characteristics.

Basically what your tuner is doing is using another sense (hearing) to tune the motor. This is very important especially at WOT. At wot you have so many things to watch on the dyno like RPM, fuel pressure, oil pressure, A/F's, coolant temps, inlet air temps, timing values, roller traction, and listen for detonation all at the same time while the engine is screaming to red line. By using these det cans we can take one of those things you need to look for and listen for it. Detonation makes a very specific sound and when being heard through the det cans I can react and get off the throttle very quickly before damage occurs.

To sum it up no sir if any thing I do not think your tuner is unprofessional by any means it shows me he is in the know about tuning. As far as the shop that did not it doesn’t mean they are bad just there choice. I do not use them on all cars either.

Are you sure he wasn't listening to the new "Back Street Boys" CD?
