General questions of getting AP, right for me?
I'm just looking to see if the AP is what I really want to get or need. I'm looking for unbiased answers. I spend alot of time at work and lately quite a bit of time trying to find info for the Cobb Tuning product. Intelligent answers please (thanks!).
I'm about ready to "pop the cherry" on my 06 MR. I've had it about a year now. It's been dealer serviced except for the last oil and filter change done by me. I just had the drive train fluids changed at about 18.000 mi. Dealer said it didnt need to be done until 32k or so but I asked them to do it, so it's "on the records".
Here Goes:
I will be putting on a Cobb Tuning TBE and Megan O2 housing in the next week (again by me). I'm a damn good mechanic and really into electronics. I know I will need a tune after the bolt-on's. I purchased the stuff from Velocity Factor in south Fl. Felipe there suggested I get the Access Port for my MR. He told me he has an EVO and that John and Scott both did a tune for him and they are great guys. He mentioned that the tunes were very aggressive, making as much HP as possible and boost was way wild, like a strip car all of the time. He said the AP does for him exactly what he wants. Mild when needed and wild when wanted, quickly.
I drive my MR every day and the gas mileage sucks as could be expected. I spoke to Scott awhile back and he's very cool. He told me that I could get my original ROM to swap back as I wished if he tuned me. I'm ready to do 2 things. Access Port, or Tactrix cable and software.
1) How are the maps modded with the Access Port? What software is used? If my F/A ratio, boost, and other parameters need to be tweaked am I at the mercy of Cobb or will I be able to use what I absorb from the excellent tune guide here?
2) Ok I know the dealer can dig deep and see that I have actually been into the ECU. If I flash the stock ROM back in can they still tell? Let's say I have ACD trouble and need to take it in for warranty work will I definitely have problems, even if I take the time and put the stock components back in? I plan on doing very little mods on this car for the life of it. I'd rather have a 10 yr old stock MR than a riced out one personally.
3) Does Cobb ask for a data log to mod my ROM or do they just give me a generic ROM and say "see if it works"? How long does the support last?
4) I know that the potential for better power is there even for a mostly stock EVO. I'm a "green" guy so have opted for the high flow cat with the TBE. I already purchased an O2 spacer for the rear sensor. Will I need it? And if I get a CEL will disabling the light not let me know of other problems or will the part of the ECU that triggers the CEL for rear O2 troubles still let it trigger for other things?
5) Will a custom map loaded into my ECU be able to be loaded into the AP if it's not a COBB AP map? I guess I'm asking if it's kind of like an iTunes thing, taking the file...converting it to an MP3...and then storing it on another pc. I'm definitely not hinting that I would like to take a mail order flash, and flash my ECU then load it into the AP. But you get the idea. I was just wondering. $700 or so for the AP doesn't really look too bad to me.
That's about it. My warranty is very important to me but also so is squeezing a little more HP while being streetable. 10 yr 100,000 mi. is a pretty good deal. And honestly the way I drive, my clutch should last for many many miles. I have a 91 GSX with 270,000 on it mostly driven by me. I got 120k on the first clutch. Pretty good, huh! Or I'm simply a wuss driver. Anyway that was mostly highway miles.
Thanks in advance.

1. THe maps are from cobb...you plug in the AP and it loads in a new map based on your mods..........OR....you pay a tuner who has the COBB tuning software to give you a custom tune.
2. WHo knows for sure....call cobb on that one...some people say no way they would know, others say otherwise......be prepared when you mod your warranty will probably go BYE BYE
3. CObb doesn't ask for anything...you just buy it and load the maps or have a PRo-Tuner give you a custom map
4. Don't know...call cobb
5. No.
Good luck
Dunno how much help this will be but....I ran the V2 AP on my STi and it is a very user friendly device, but I would definately recommend finding a Cobb protuner to actually do a custom map for you. The base maps that come on the device are decent but they are all tuned to run pretty rich. Take all I said with a grain of salt as both cars of different but if I helped any then great.
