Question Which Tuner to go with?

Hey Guys-

I am looking to get my 2004 Evo VIII tuned. I have read many posts including the 'How to Tune an Evo' - https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=302895 Which has been very helpful in explaining how to go about doing it yourself. Ideally, I'd like to get help from a pro the first time around and MAYBE after I see what changes are made and why, I'd feel more comfortable making changes in the future by myself...

Anyways-

I am not sure which tuner I should go through?

Mellon Tuning? 4WS Tuning?

Any experiences, words of wisdom or pros and cons, would be great!

Thanks!

do an advanced search for threads with "mellon tuning" in the title and do a little reading to get an idea about the quality of the tune and customer service, I think you'll be impressed I found 69 results of customer feedback for me and all positive. I found 10 of the other guy and 1 negative

Thanks for the input Guys-

To be honest I have been leaning towards Mellon the whole time, just figured I'd ask anyway!

Actually - question for ya Chris...
I was looking to upgrade to an FP Red sometime around the March time frame. I will be upgrading my injectors, and stock intercooler. If I wanted to do a tune say sometime before Christmas, how does it work if I'd like a re-tune come March?

I recently read a thread about you working on a tune for someone with a Red, how's that coming along?

Thanks

I dont have experience with 4WS but i do have with melllon, and i can definatly say that he will let you know what he is doing each step of the way. Very patient and good overall person to work with. You wont find a single negative feedback about him.

good luck

You'd need to buy two tunes since the mod level will be entirely different I'm assuming (injectors/turbo etc..)

I have 3 reds in progress I believe but all are progressing slowly due to the customers not returning log files timely.

1 - 436awhp on 93 octane at 23psi, he wanted to do low boot and higher timing, not my choice of strategy but I want to give the customer what he wants. We didn't finish the tune but apparently he's satisfied with that because I haven't heard from him in awhile. Sometimes customers go silent when they park their cars for the winter.

2 - 400awhp on 93 octane at 20psi, we're going to be shooting for 30psi but this one also has been slow to return the log files. Right now the timing is very low in preparation for the 30psi coming soon.

3 - 471awhp on 93 octane at 30psi, I'm almost finished tuning this one and suddenly the paypal payment was reversed by a credit card company in belgium. I think it may have been a stolen credit card...paypal is trying to sort it out for me

so unfortunately I haven't finished a single red tune but not for not trying

Thanks for the quick response

OK - Yeah, that makes sense, guess it would be two different tunes. Is it a good idea to get it tuned before I make more changes by adding the Red and injectors etc.?

Cool! I'm glad your working on a few Reds. I'm looking forward to finally getting tuned, should be a good time

My car is actually in the shop right now...(long story there). I'll have it back for next week. I'll be in touch after I break in the new clutch!

Thanks man!

you could get tuned now or wait until later and only pay once...some people like to be tuned to perfection each step of the way and others wait, it's a personal decision based on what works best for you. If you have mods and it's running like poo or just not up to your expectations then you may want to get that fixed, I would. I can't have a slow evo with mods, that would drive me bonkers

This is true...

Maybe I'll go with a baseline tune like Package A and then opt for something like Package C once I install the Red.

Thanks Chris

I would do B, you'll want the limiters adjusted for the tune unless you're running stock boost. I agree, C later for the Red
