I use OEM IC piping, other than the LICP which was never noticed. I stripped the paint off it so it was bare aluminum. Nobody said anything about the silicone coupling. Maybe I got lucky there. I didn't get questioned about my Blitz FMIC, either. Probably because it's mostly hidden and works with OEM IC stuff.

Changing the intercooler itself doesn't require an exemption. Probably because of how common it is for them to be damaged etc. Still some techs don't know all the laws (just like the cops) and you still run a slight risk of at least getting them on their toes and giving things a closer look. This is why I am a believer in OEM intake and airbox. Nothing says I don't do **** to my car like an OEM airbox and intake. The Intercooler pipes however do require an exemption. Most regular smog techs wont know the difference between a silicone coupler vs an OEM etc. What they will notice are logo's and bright colors or shiny stuff. Stealth is absolutely critical. Everything should be dirty and old looking for best effect. Absolutely no logo's, brands, bright colors etc. I know wrinkle black is common to use on intake pipes for stealth.

I saw a while back that Injen intake and intercooler piping kit was CARB legal.

Blitz intercooler according to one website I saw is 68mm (2.67") thick, might not stand out as much as the poplar 3.5" ETS. Also the intercooler top can be painted black like stock.

My planned mod list to hopefully hit about 320whp for now. Project "Stealth" lol
-Works o2 housing with stock heatshield (looks OEM)
-3" downpipe (preferably mild steel, rusty and ugly to look OEM lol)
-Ultimate racing HF cat (looks OEM)
-Tanabe cat-back
-AEM CARB Intake (has OE number, g2g)
-ECU Tune (RRE, etc.) on 91 octane (will just reflash with Tactrix cable and ECU Flash, 5-10 min to complete)

Does anyone make a stock-looking intercooler and piping?
Injen intercooler pipes are smog legal with their CARB sticker. FMIC should all be smog legal but ref tech may disagree.

Intercoolers should be legal per the Smog Check Manual: https://www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/2017_Smog_Check_Manual.pdf (scroll to page 49) but I don't know about the piping. I'm sure something stock looking and stock routing would be fine.

What also doesn't need an EO number verification: Catbacks, PCV catch cans and..water injection??? What?!

What are all your thoughts on the updated list for the CA stealth build? (items in yellow need attention before inspection)
300ish whp:
-Works o2 housing with stock heatshield (looks OEM)

-3" downpipe (preferably mild steel, rusty and ugly to look OEM lol)
-Ultimate racing HF cat (looks OEM)
-Tanabe cat-back
-AEM CARB Intake (has OE number)
-ECU Tune (RRE, etc.) on 91 octane (will just reflash with Tactrix cable and ECU Flash, 5-10 min to complete)
-Blitz Intercooler
-Stock-appearance intercooler piping
-Electronic o2 simulator for downstream sensor prevents CEL from HF cat

Additional mods for 400+ whp:

-larger injectors
-high flow fuel pump
-FP cast manifold w/ stock heat shield
-upgraded turbo in stock Evo 9 frame/housings
-E85 and/or 91 octane w/ AEM water injection

This is all just hypothetical for the sake of discussion. I'm not planning to do anything illegal here.

All my research into catch cans has concluded that they alter PCV and are thus not legal. I would love to be wrong about that though because running one would be desirable.

Cat backs have always been legal. C.A.R.B. is only concerned with ANYTHING between the air filter and cat. converter. This does surprise me, though: PCV catch cans and..water injection.

I will say that, in my town anyway, our smog techs are so scared of fines and being secret shopped by the B.A.R., they will fail you for anything and everything. Non-OEM vacuum line? Not passing. As pointless as the laws are... the worst part is that none of the techs seem to know them and error far, far, FAR on the side of caution.

You should put in yellow the HF Cat, as long as it is not OEM or CARB approved why risk it. I think it would be easier to remove the cat and replace with stock then get caught with HF cat and have to replace Works O2 housing. Also you can remove the AEM intake and replace with Injen intake and intercooler piping. Those two are CARB legal and sold in a "kit".

True, but they suck (pun intended). I'd rather have an AEM intake and OEM IC piping.

My 2 cents are bolded behind each:

300ish whp:
-Works o2 housing with stock heatshield (looks OEM) Good idea, should pass

-3" downpipe (preferably mild steel, rusty and ugly to look OEM lol) Unless you can create an OEM heat shield around the downpipe, ref tech will flag it
-Ultimate racing HF cat (looks OEM) This could pass (50/50), maybe...LOL
-Tanabe cat-back Should pass
-AEM CARB Intake (has OE number) Check the CARB number to make sure it didn't expire (yes, they have expired CARB numbers that will fail in system)
-ECU Tune (RRE, etc.) on 91 octane (will just reflash with Tactrix cable and ECU Flash, 5-10 min to complete)
-Blitz Intercooler Should pass
-Stock-appearance intercooler piping 50/50 chance of passing since I have not seen any that look like stock
-Electronic o2 simulator for downstream sensor prevents CEL from HF cat

Additional mods for 400+ whp:

-larger injectors
-high flow fuel pump Will pass
-FP cast manifold w/ stock heat shield 99.9% Should pass with oem heat shield
-upgraded turbo in stock Evo 9 frame/housings Should pass
-E85 and/or 91 octane w/ AEM water injection Won't run to pass with stock tune

This is all just hypothetical for the sake of discussion. I'm not planning to do anything illegal here. OOOHHHHH, OF COURSE NOT!!!!

No trolling or sarcasm: do people still street race? I've been out that scene since about 2005

I only race at Fontana track because there is no traffic there. It's too dangerous on the streets and freeways because so many disasters can happen.
