usb to serial adapter?

Is anyone connecting to the utec with a laptop that only has usb ports. If so, what brand converter are you using, and how did you configure it? I'm having some problems with my laptop, it's getting frustrating having to borrow my buddies everytime I want to connect to my utec. Any help would be appreciated

Yeah, there's quite a few USB to Serial adapters out there.. Their pretty common for PDA's since some sync cables are still serial.. CompUSA sells them, every one that I tried (with the exception of one) worked fine..

I ended up using the one I had laying around, I think it was made for belkin.. Basically as long as it looks like a serial port to hyperterminal, it should work fine.. the only one that didn't work was one that didn't have "power" or provide some sort of power on the signal lines.. almost all of them get their power for the port from the USB port so it should be fine.

For some reason I can't get any of them to work. I guess it could be my laptop. I also tried an mcip(or something like that) card which didn't work either. I don't know what to try next. Is it a possiblility that the drivers are configured wrong?

Maybe, or the problem is with the serial cable to the UTEC itself..

I'll double check the connections on the utec, thing is it works fine with my friend's laptop that has a serial port built in. I talk to the mfg. company, and they had me download some updates for the computer, so maybe it will work now. Frustrating though, my turbo kit will be here friday, and If I don't get this to work i'm gonna snap!! Thanks for the thoughts,
Rob

Try looking on newegg.com, i've seen them for as little as $15. The one @ my Radio Shack sells for $40.

I am using the iogear adapter without a single problem on the UTEC or the EMS (no, they are not installed at the same time Make sure the USB port you are using is the COM port the iogear driver is installed to and also make sure that the proper COM port is setup in Hyperterminal (O/T: is HT really the best option TXS can come up with in this day and age?).

Are you serious? HT is just a terminal and is just an interface into a system (Utec). These types of setups come from the unix world and have been proven for years. More than Likely the system designers knew what they were doing and had no need for some flashy web interface that would more than likely jsut cause development costs.
