Opinions on EGT's?

The other day I got on the car hard in 5th. 140MPH for a few miles. My EGT's did not exceed 1200F. Normal cruizing they are <1000F Does this mean that I am leaving a lot of power on the table with my tune? If anyone cares to share their opinions about EGT's and how they relate to tuning, I would love to hear it. {thumbup}

P.S Yes. I am trying to outpost MalibuJack :lol:

I cruise at 1200, and get to 1400 when I am full throttle.

Not necessarily, it depends on WHAT is affecting your EGT temps.. AFR or Timing..

Generally when your tuning by EGT, you have to find the point where the temps are generally lowest.. Too lean = high EGT's, too much timing = detonation and EGT's can vary, and too little timing = High EGT's because the air fuel mixture is still burning after the exhaust valves open, and too rich usually means high EGT's because unburned gas is getting into the exhaust and is also still basically burning.. therefore its a balance, but generally under WOT the lower the temps the better (within reason). Nobody really tunes only by EGT, you really need to also be aware of engine knock and AFR's since all of these things are tradeoffs. Generally keep the temp way below the melting point of aluminum.. ;)

And BTW.. I post WAY too much.. I took a day off yesterday from posting.. :helpme:

I wish I was paid to do this.. I've been feeling out the tuner magazine industry a bit recently to see if I wanted to contribute to them as a tech editor/writer. Can a career change be in my future? LOL
