Can't say enough, H2O injection!!

I have been tweaking my tune on the Coolingmist.com water injection set-up I installed on my car.
I think I'm at my 95% solution.
I'm running 91 octane (West coast piss). I'm boosting to 24psi (dropping to 20.5 by redline), with afr at 11.5:1 becoming 11.1:1 by 7800rpms. Timing is peaking at 18.7deg (I can add more).
Not even the slightest hint of knock! This thing is pulling like a diesel! And that is on a 20% methanol solution of WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID!
I just found a local supplier of 100% methanol. I just refilled with a 50/50 mix of distilled water/methanol. I'm sure I can crank boost to full tilt on stock turbo and still advance the timing and lean it out some more.
I'm getting almost two tanks of gas to one resevour of injection fluid. (I boost all the time).
I've got the injection set to start at 14psi. It's not progressive, but that doesn't seem to be a factor.
This is the best $300 I've spent on performance.
did I mention I love this UTEC, (and my new injection set-up)!!! {thumbup}

Hmm. Interesting. Just one question, are you using stock cams? I run up to 20.5 timing by redline. And yet no knock.

I'm sure you still are tuning at this point. Plus nice price for the set-up.

bishiboy Mar 19, 2005 07:39 PM

No, I have HKS 272s. Cam gears set at -4/-1.
I'm being very conservative with timing because I've already blown one motor.
Without water injection, I can only push to 20psi, afr 11:1 becoming 10.7:1 by redline and timing much lower accross the board, peaking at 16.5deg.
I still occasionally get a 01 or 02 knock around 6500rpms with this set-up.

sorry for the off topic. but if im only running a fuel map and have a 11.0-10.8afr across the board, but still get a 01-04 knock, is that really knock or is it just the utec not being smooth? justin

bishiboy Mar 19, 2005 07:52 PM

It could be knock.
Drop your timing in these areas and see if it helps.
I actually raised my sensitivity to knock from the default levels, (due to blowing my previous motor).
Your afr sounds ok. Set your boost to 20psi, then adjust your timing.
If you're and East coast 93 octane guy, you can push 21psi safely.

BSREVOLUTION Mar 19, 2005 07:53 PM

91 octane, and im on stock timing.

bishiboy Mar 19, 2005 07:56 PM

By stock timing, do you mean you have the timing map set to all "ECU"?
If so, you can do what I did.
Use the ECU timing as a base, and take advantage of the UCC feature of timing map builder. Then adjust from there.
The ECU doen't always know what's best, that's why we have UTECs.

o3evo8 Mar 19, 2005 08:00 PM

what kit did you buy? and from where?

BSREVOLUTION Mar 19, 2005 08:04 PM

yeah, i have "ecu" there.

i have the ucc but i have problems saving the maps on the ucc after making filling the timing map. an error about the sums always comes on.

bishiboy, im okay on tuning the fuel, but timing isn't my slice of pie. could you give me a little step by step on tuning the timing? justin

right here

I get the check sum crap and also have issues just conecting to the Utec software.
I have the battery adaptor hooked up in my glove box. I attach a 9V battery and turn on my key to accessory to use the map tools in both programs.
Use the build (skeleton) timing table tool in the UCC program, then fill it in.
As far as adjusting timing, since you are already experiencing slight knock, lower the timing by .5 deg in the rpm/load sites you are getting knock until it goes away.
Then you can tweak it back up until knock shows back up then back off.
The stock ECU is pretty fickle, so error on the conservative side.
Sometimes while data logging, the stock ECU timing is more advanced and sometimes my modified timing is more advanced. The key is no knock.

are you using a map sensor? if so, are your loads smooth? meaning do you get a equal amount of loads? like 10,10,20,20,30,30...

rraulston Mar 19, 2005 09:18 PM

that UCC timing feature confuses me. Can someone post more of a 1, 2, 3, for how to use it??? Bishi, just had the R&R gt35R installed. Drove through Yuma today heading back to Tucson. Next time ill let you know and we can "play car" for a few hours.... Ray

There's not alot to it, you need to log a bit of data, and then let it autofill the map for the timing.. the more data you have for different loads, RPM and throttle, the more of the map will be filled..

Then you go through and smooth it so there aren't large transitions at any point..

Thats really all there is to it.

bishiboy Mar 20, 2005 07:17 AM

Yeah, The UCC timing tool is simple.
Open your datalog, then open your map. Click on create skeleton, then click on fill map.
Go back and make sure there aren't big jumps, and your done. Now go log that map and tweak the timing where needed.

BSR: I do have the Turboxs MAP sensor. It is smoother but I still get jumps in load sites. I don't think the bit rate can keep up with the engine. That's why you need alot of data logging, not just a few full throttle pulls in 3rd gear.
When I go out and log, I do 2 or 3 full throttle pulls in 3rd and 4th (I have the room on the desert roads). Then I'll do some lower rpm pulls in 5th. The go thru the gears to redline.

rraulston: shoot me a PM when your around, there isn't alot of real cars in this town, mostly Honda wanabees.
