20w-50

Ok i've seen on this forums that turbos should get 20w-50, but the engine calls for 5w-30. isn't that to heavy for the engine to handle? you would think because of the heavier oil that the engine would sieze up and **** would be broken. why cant you just run what the manufactory calls for in a regular engine-5w30? why would it be any different with a turbo. i know that it well run hotter but all that means to me is that the oil well become 30wieght quicker. need some insight on this.

Cmon, you're really gonna tie up another thread with something thats been answered a million times over? The car asks for 5w30 factory for naturally aspirated. Forced induction uses a thicker oil because a) it gets hotter, b) it aids in cooling the super hot turbo down c) its what RRM recommends, and no offense, but they've done 10000 times more research on turbocharging the 4g94 than both us and Mitsu have. Stick with what works, 20w50 works for everyone, including high horsepower lancers, so why knock a good thing.

And ps - the engine can handle any weight oil short of straight up sludge

Who would think that? Lots of Lancers use it. They don't seize up.

And how can you say "why would it be any different with a turbo"? You don't think boost changes things a little bit...

Ps - sorry if i sounded harsh haha. I'm just pissed at the ol lancer right now. Why can't Downpipes that exhaust shops make actually hold up longer than a month. Grrrr got a nice exhaust leak goin on between the turbo and the cat and i dont really wanna have to get another damn thing fixed haha. Cheers

So we can't run Royal Purple on our cars once we go Turbo? I see all the evo guys doing it.

5w-30 is fine. The w stands for winter. It acts as a 5 weight in cold and 30 in summer.

Why the heavier weight? Are the Turbos oil cooled?

Im not trying to say anyones wrong or right, I'd just like to see the reasoning behind it.

The SRT guys run 0-20 and 5-20, oil cooled turbos. I used 5-20 in my Talon, and the Evo guys dont even run 20-40, they run 10-30

Do you see any gains with 20-40 or what?

I'd imagine 40 in the winter would be pretty harsh?

They have it at the AutoZone a mile from my house. *shrugs shoulders*

And there's always Summit Racing for the mail-order oil folks...

Eh. No worries. I've actually never run RP. I generally head up to Wal-mart and grab the gallon jug of Mobil 1. Granted, with my RS pushing 108k, I could probably switch to a "high mileage" motor oil.
If the Camaro ever starts to run consistently (like where I don't remove any parts for repair every time I drive it), I might go to using RP. As it is, I usually put about a thousand miles between oil changes.
