Turbos and oil

Ok, I have read on here that you can't use synthetic oil with a turbo. My question is why? What about super chargers?

It will be a few years before I go this route, and will do it right by using upgraded pistons and internals, but this has me curious. If someone can explain it, that would be great. Thanks.

Weight is weight, viscosity is viscosity. Unless someone can show me why 10w30 dino != 10w30 synthetic I'm going to continue believing that's a myth. There's no technical reason to believe otherwise.

For the record I ran 15w50 until I (presumably) blew a piston last Thursday. I'm tearing down my car right now.

HobeiKopek,

How much boost were you running when you blew a piston?

Do you have stock internals? I'm thinking of increase my boost....

Thanks

It had nothing to do with the boost I was running. It had to do with undiagnosed problems in my fuel system.

Now please keep the thread on topic. If you have questions for me PM me, contact me on AIM, or post in my thread in troubleshooting. This thread is about erl. (oil)

i am running 20w50 which is recommended by RRM for their kit. I personally dont want to risk anything so I run good ol' dino oil.

Dino Oil for us. Won't go into it. That is what we do though.

I don't mean to bust ***** Rob, but since you're a big proponent of dino that's exactly what I want (for you to get into it).

it's a very close debate whether fossil or synthetic should be used, but the practiced standard has been synth oils for FI'd cars. the reason being is that synthetic oils have a higher breakdown temperature than fossil based oils. you can run dino oil on an FI'd car, but you really should change your oil more frequently.

turbo's produce an amazing amount of heat through the exhaust pouring through one turbine, and the other turbine creating heat saturated compressed air. the bearing sleeve is situated between the two housings and absorbs a lot of heat. The problem with older turbos is that they lacked water cooling. All turbos are produced with water cooling jackets that keep the oil temps low, but the oil will break down over a period of time.

and as andrew said, weight and viscosity are the same between the two types, it's all about heat tolerance

Didn't Kontra have an issue with synthetic? I could be wrong, but I think he had a large thread going where Rob listed why RRM won't recommend artificial oil.

dunno. i'm just stating a fact as to why synthetic oils are used more regularly than fossil oils.

it was more or less a decision reached because the general populace is too lazy to change their oil more often. i whole heartedly belive (in my conspiracy theoried little world) that the 3000 mile myth was started so people would change their oil more regularily than never. much like how speed limits are set knowing that 98% of the motorists will go 5 over.

Ok I'll get into it. I'm old fashioned!

We have had this debate before at length. do a search!

Nobody cracks me up like me!

Seriously though, it seem like Lancer oil pumps like dino oil better.

Both sides have good points but i like to stick with hobie on this one.. there has been no real proof that synthetic is bad.. but its kinda odd that most people who have turbo lancers blew their motors running synthetic from what i know kontraditions ran synthetic and blew.. now that he's running regular 20W50 he has had no problems.. :P

^ the great mod

i wasn't stating that all lancer owners should switch to synth oil. i don't own a lancer. Look at my ride. it's a 240 with the SR20 swap. i run synth and i stated my reasons. if the lancer oil pump can't tolerate synthetics, then that's the fact. i just didn't want a bunch of turbo lancer owners running out and telling everyone who runs synth in their cars to switch to dino
