I have an 03 lancer es with a stock stereo system. It's alright but I'm looking for something better. I'm thinking a pioneer DEH-1800 (seems like a good budget player) with maybe 4 Panasonic 3-way speakers replacing all the stock ones. Will this give me some decent bass (not lookin for anything earth shattering) and decent highs? and clarity? What do you all recommend as a good, cheap, combo? Also say I kept my stock cd player in and just replaced the speakers. Would that make a diff or would I definately have to remove my stock headunit to get a substantial amount of performance from the speakers? Thanks
Replacing the stock speakers would make the most difference in sound quality, from there you would change the stock head unit. Down the road, you can add a small four channel amp to give you a little more punch in the midbass if you wish.
Hey
if I get a cd player that can handle like 25w rms and get all new speakers should I get some decent mids and lows? So I really should change my cd player and I would notice a good diff in music quality?
Sorry to bring this back from death to life. Now I'm thinking that I really want some ipod compatibility so I'm thinking about a kenwood and that ipod adapter that plugs into the back of it. Will that kenwood make my speakers sound any better? and my freakin cd player isn't picking up any fm or am signal and the antenna is in there fine and all wires were plugged in snug. Anyone hear of a cd player not being about to pick up any signal? Thanks
Actually, a friend of mine just picked up a Pioneer deck w/ an auxillary input (for an Ipod) in the front. Sorry, I don't know the model # off hand. It was pretty nice though for around $150.
I personally think a HU upgrade would be a good first move. If you can work a new HU and component speakers (6.5 and tweeters) in the front into your budget, you'd be in good shape for a while.

I'm sure he needed a pioneer "ipod connector" that costs like 50 on top of the price for the cd player. Unless it came with the cd player. Will a new HU make my stock speakers sound any better/louder than they are now? Thanks
Now that I think about it, you're right about the "ipod connector". And, yes, a cleaner source signal should make the stock speakers sound better, and at least a bit more power from the new HU should make them louder.
sweet. thx man. I hope my fm radio will work better b/c right now it sucks horribly. I also hope they I don't blow my speakers with the new power from my HU. Any idea how much rms the stock headunit throws out per channel? Thanks
actually a little while back I picked up a cheapish Panasonic head unit that had an aux input on the front so I could connect an ipod, etc. It made quite a noticable difference to my overall sound, as it was much crisper and allowed me to play it louder without distortion because of the sound quality upgrade, so you might be suprised what just a head unit will do to your audio.
man this thread is full of bable so hear you go. Damn near any new cd player/head unit you get is going to improve your stock speakers sound quality(lows mids highs and clarity). If your stock radio isn't playing am/fm it could be the radio so when u get your new one you'll find out. If it doesn't play am/fm still then u have a wiring problem. and so many head units now come with the aux input jack in the front for ur ipod. But do u want the wire going from ur ipod up ur dash to ur cd players face or u want to run a wire that hooks up in the back and allows u to put the wire where ever u want. gotta think about that. also make sure it has a sub out if u ever plan on putting a sub in. Now for speakers i say go component but that costs scrilla($) (if u are gonna get just regular speakers then go with 2-way speakers over 3-way if i remember right) have fun crutchfield has good info if u need more info
