Removing spare tire for sub box

Has anyone done this? I have a Kicker sub that requires a semi large box, and it takes up a lot of room in my trunk, and pretty much just looks lame. I was thinking about making a custom box and submerging part of the box into this hole. I was wondering if anyone had done this. To me it makes a lot sense, it will take up less room, it will look cleaner, and it will not move when mounted good. I mean yeah, you loose your spare tire, but I have tuner lugs on my wheels, and unless I carry around a breaker bar, the right socket, and 4 regular lugs, it does me little good anyway.

So my question is... have any of you done this? and if so can I see pictures? or an explination of how you did it and how it works/looks?

Also... what is the best wood to use for construction a box? Is it something special that I need to purchase at an audio store?

Thanks in advance.

i've seen and done alot. i really dont recomend trying this if you have never built something like this before. it can be done and can look really good if you know what you are doing. i did something similar on a srt 4 but i also made it a whole custom trunk here are some pics just to give you an idea of what it could look like

hope this helps you out for ideas

ive seen a few people make a fiberglass sub box in the spare tire well. the sub will actually sit flush with the floor. you coudl try and see if someone has one for sale.

but if you just make one out of wood, the best wood to use is 3/4in MDF. and you can find it at lows and home depot.

also what kind of kicker sub is it? because my buddy has 4 10's of the one pictured above in his mazda 3, and they sound so much better in small sealed boxes like he has them in.

It's an older kicker solo baric, I bought it used a while ago. I guess I've never done any research on it, but the kid I bought it from had a custom box made, and it is quite large. So I'm assuming it is a correctly sized box. There are no markings on the front, Do you think the style is marked on the back? And about experience building stuff like this... I don't really have a lot of experience with boxes, but I've done the wiring in a few cars, and think I'm getting the hang of it. Also I've done a lot of woodwork, just never anything that includes a sub box. So I think I could put together something pretty nice. I was just looking for some ideas.

Thanks for the resonses.

use 3/4 mdf for the box if you want to do more stuff like i did to fill in the area you can use 1/4 mdf or any other thin sheet. see what model the sub is then go on kickers page they will have all the size requirements on there. I find sealed subs sound really good if you build the box to the min specs. best of luck keep us updated

^yup, he may have had it n a custom box, but doesnt mean it was the right cubic feet for your sub. if you port your box it may be a bit louder but will also have more distortion, and the minimum box size will be much larger then if you were to make a sealed box.

a sealed box will also sound much cleaner. also if you decide to make a ported box you need to get the port length and diameter the rite size for your box. ive found the best thing to use is 3-4" pvc pipe for the ports.

ive been making them since i was 15 for my cars and friends as well, so if your good with wood you'll be fine.

Thank you for your replies, that calculator seems like it would be very helpful. I plan on starting this project next week, I'll keep you up to date and make sure to ask any questions that come up.

IIRC there is a small hole in the bottom of the spare tire well of the lancers..at least there was in my 03. theres a little metal piece covering it but it has a tendency to bounce loose. I'm not rly sure what the point of it is..a drain plug? although i never planned on having water in my trunk.

just something you may want to think about covering up..i used hush mat..cuz water may splash up in there if u go through enough of it..good luck with everything

lol... I'm not going that all out, just thinking something a little more simple. like the sub recessed in the spare tire hole, coming out at an angle, then the amp mounted nicely next to it, and puting some new carpet down. The ideas are floating through my head, I just have to decided on one before I go out buying materials lol.

wow thats simple, yet very clean.

only thing i would be worried about, is that i doubt each sub actually has its own air space in there.

I was thinking that the volume in the spare tire hole was similar to the box I have now, but maybe a little larger. Does anyone just seal up the cracks in the hole and put a sealed board over top of the hole with the sub mounted right in that board? Or do people typically build a box that sits in the hole. I would think it would sound better if there was a seperate box built, then placed in the hole, but it doesn't look like that was done in the above picture...
