Engine running rough

2003 ES, 5-speed. 224,000 mi. ‘Service Engine Soon’ read upstream and downstream o2 sensors, replaced both. Still running rough.

It idles rough and runs rough, both intermittently, up to about 2300rpm.

Thoughts?

Also, the exhaust makes a put-put instead of a smooth, normal sound.

Have you tried resetting the ECU after you replaced the o2 sensors? See if another code comes up

New code reads ‘cylinder 2 misfire’. I know the car never had spark plugs changed...maybe time for a tuneup?

Pulled the old spark plugs, on the plug to the far right as you face the car from the front, there was oil on the plug and in the cylinder the plug and wire go into. There wasn’t any oil on the operating part of the plug, just the part the wire plugs into. I guess the question is where would the oil come from and how can I fix that...

Replaced spark plugs and valve cover gasket/o-rings, reset light. Still ran rough, albeit less so. Cleaned the MAFS, ran a little better. At this point, it’s only when at idle when completely warmed up, and going from a stop in first or second gear until about 1700rpm. Past that it’s totally fine. Also, it’s a slightly different rough from the misfire.

Also, I might mention that I unplugged the MAF sensor and the car ran worse, and died fairly quickly.

You're saying that it's hesitant while pulling out? If so, I'd look into the throttle position sensor
