Hi OZ. Chips are a waste of $ on a normally aspirated engine. You'd do much better to take the money and do other mods to your lancer such as an upgraded intake and/or exhaust to gain some performance. But be forewarned that these are probably not going to give you any huge numerical gains in hp or torque. Check out the AEM and Injen websites to look at their dyno charts for an idea.

All the chip upgrades that make people happy are usually on turbocharged cars that raise the boost pressure and fueling to make the engine put out more horsepower.

The biggest perf upgrade route for the Lancer is the purchase of a TC upgrade kit. RPW and RRM offer complete packages and varying levels of upgrades depending on how much $ you want to spend. In any event, major $, around $3k or higher to get started.

Use the "SEARCH" function on turbo, intake, exhaust to read all the info that's been discussed in depth before...

Also, you may want to post a general question such as this in the Newbie or General forum vs Engine Tech....

Thanx for the advice. But i already have upgraded my exhuast and intake. Those were first to be upgraded, and am now looking for something else to do. I'm waiting to do my body work, and rims untill after the winter so i was looking for more in the engine performance area.

the only chip i have seen was an ecu chip on e-bay, which increases the timing, and supossedly gains 10-15 hp....but not sure about it...

Well ok - would have been nice if you had put that info about already having intake and exhaust in your original post - save a few keystrokes!

Mitsuman on the forum of RPW in Aussieland has said that changing out your stock fuel pressure regulator (FPR) provides some kind of a responsiveness gain in terms of acceleration. You may want to PM him about this or read his posts by searching

RRM / Rock offer an enlarged throttle body which on their website claims more airflow to the engine.

I haven't seen a big push for engine internal upgrades on the forum since most keep the engine NA and there's no need for upgrades unless running high levels of boost from a TC kit.

i'd hold off on the chip for now. uhm you can check out JET. they sell chips for many cars. the deal with their chip though is that tehy are programmed to your mods. if you add a mod, you got to get it reprogrammed or the chip is useles...

This whole chip business really belongs on cars with pre-OBD technology or OBD-I computers. They were nice and easy to tweak'ify. Now that everything is OBD-II, it makes stuff a lot more difficult. Mitsu ECU's are sealed tight and soldered down to prevent anyone from reprogramming them. That and from what I've seen, their code is nasty to play with. Then you've got things like that Venom thing that which simply reduces the amount of pedal effort to reach WOT...garbage. If I'm going to be dealing with anything electronic with the car, something like e-manage after some serious mods or an AFC after some mild mods would be the only things I'd (or my local shop) deal with.

with JET you send them a list of your mods, and your ecu and they do their business, whatever that they do and then they send your ECU back

well i think chips work for na engines... just not at the moment. Look at the 2.0 vw engine for instance. Nuespeed has cams for the 2.0vw. Without cams the ecu would push up the hp... then add the cams you have more just from that.. but getting the chip reprogramed with the cams adds even more.... i not sure what the numbers are but i know it does. My buddy 2.0 vw has the whole new speed setup for the 2.0 and stock its at 115hp. Now hes running around 165hp. Hes beat a civic si. I've read many articles on those guys. But for now a chip wouldn't do any good unless until more things become available.

I believe Rock was tooling around with a ECU upgrade...requires hooking up a laptop to your ECU and remapping to your specific car. I wouldn't reccomend it unless you are DONE with your engine mods, as you will have to get it reprogrammed again if anything changes.

Rather than using a Chip as such consider looking into somehting like the GReddy EManage system which is a piggy back computer.

BUt not worthwhile using until you have done al lthe basics like extractors, exhaust, throttle body, FPR unit, air intake and possibly even camshafts. Then you can get the most benefits from it.
