Dumb Question: OBD II READER: Don't Laugh

My father has given me an OBD II code reader; due to an exhaustive list of warranty bulls**t I have been chasing an SES light on my own for 4 months. I have a complete list of codes and I'm very capable as a mechanic. The car has had a complete tune-up.

I'm pretty sure the light is on due to a small, C-curved pipe running from the manifold to the exhaust: It is barely attached at the manifold. Until I patched it, it also had a hole. Just to be sure, I want to see codes.

Where do I plug in the code reader on the Lancer??? Sad but true, I have no clue!!!
(I know you're all laughing LOL LOL LOL)

to the right of the steering column, actually closer to the center console under the dash. There are two connections and you'll want the one that runs left-right. Just stick your head under there and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Good luck with the code hunting {thumbup}

OMG Thank you so much. I had a feeling it would be in the dash. My last car - it was under the passenger floorboard. I have no kind of manual or anything so all my info comes from these forums.

That's a handy tool. If you have an exhaust leak that could definitely trigger a CEL/SES. If it's that simple, consider yourself blessed. :lol:

Wasn't the standard set for all cars after 1996 to be OBD II compliant and have the access port in roughly the same spot (under the dash, driver side, off to the right)?

That was regarding the location of the port in his previous car. And yes, you are correct that all '96 and up cars sold (through normal channels) in the US are required to be OBDII compliant.

Damn right they are, but there are manufacturers that add in a crap load of other monitoring items that you need special software to read, but the regular OBD2 items are still visible. Ford is one of these.

Post up the code you read and we'll be able to help you figure out how to fix it.
