jforward5's 4g64 Swap....

Ok, Guys I'm taking the plunge. I found the Transmission after searching high and low. I will be picking it up on Saturday. This will be the beginning of my Frankenstein!

I am Very excited about this and will post pictures and progress. I am hoping to have a running monster by mid to end of April.

Tally so far:

Transmission KF5M422F6ND $550
Engine 4G64 $550 (I will post some helpful hints on choosing a good engine, I got a bad one the first time, and second time. 3rd one is GOOOD!)
Clutch $80
Power Steering Pump $30
A/C Compressor Bracket $20

Okay, so i finished this swap Friday 6/18/2010. I must say this was a very rewarding process. However there are some little bugs I need to work out so the engine will run 100% happily. Right now I am burning through a 1yr old tank of gas...and the engine is protesting it.

To do this swap properly you need to read darkmitsus-4g64-swap-thread. His write up is very detailed and will help you with the installation of the engine and transmission prep work.

Choosing a GOOD engine the HARD way!
(Both my first and second engine were bad. the second spun a bearing on 6/23/2010. Finding a good engine is a gamble and a tedious process.)
So you've decided to embark on the grand 4g64 adventure? Well first you need to find the 2 most critical parts to make this swap possible. A transmission, and of course the crown jewel your used or new 4g64 2.4 liter powerhouse. If you choose the less expensive and highly recommended route of a used engine, there are some things that can help you to choose a "good" engine.

Determine The Condition
It is hard to know just by looking at an engine how much life it has lived and how much it has left to give you but you can get some indication of how it was treated. It is beneficial to find an engine that is still in the car and that still has some electrical hooked up, well enough to hear it run.

Look at the valve cover and sides of the block. Is there allot of caked on grease and oils? Is there fresh oil around the edges of the valve cover? Are there missing screws? Now open the Oil cap and take a look inside the engine. Stick your finger inside and get some oil on your finger and smell it. Does the oil have a burnt smell? Look at the rocker arms you can see from removing the Oil cap. Do they look dark brown? Look at the rocker arm rails. Do they look dark brown?

If any of those conditions exists this engine has more than likely been abused or at least not maintained properly. This is not an exact science but if you saw grandma's car that was driven only on weekends and taken to the mechanic every 3 months you would know how a well maintained engine looks. If you smell burnt oil inside the valve cover the engine more than likely has been overheated one too many times.

Next thing to look at if the outside of the engine meets to your approval is inside the exhaust ports. To look here make sure you bring with you a 14mm wrench and ratchet with a 14mm socket and the same items in 12mm. You will need them to remove the exhaust manifold. Once you have the manifold removed look inside at the top of the valves. Do you see oil on the valves? Oil belongs inside the engine not in the exhaust or intake ports, so if you see this then you will need to replace the valve seals so your car doesn't smoke.

Next the Oil Pan. Are there dents in the pan? Is there allot of grease and oil caked on the sides of it? Is there oil caked on the oil plug? If these conditions exist the pan might leak. And if the pan is dented the engine might have problems delivering oil to the top of the engine.

Look inside the exhaust ports to see if the valve seals are leaking. Beware of this engine if those seals are bad it will smoke...

Nice im also working on a swap. Good luck to you are you going to install the dohc onto your swap before it goes in?? what plans do you have?

jforward5 Mar 17, 2010 03:48 PM

I might put the DOHC head in later. Right now I plan to complete the swap. Once I have completed the swap I will install a set of headers and a cold air intake. I don't plan to turbo this engine. My plans are for a completely N/A engine. I will try to get the most out of bolt ons for now.

However the sound of a BOV is very appealling tho...;)

good to hear its taking shape and more people are starting to do it...

Ok so I have a question about the eclipse ECU. I found some instructions on how to modify the xml file to display the immobilizer information in the Eclipse ECU. I have also found some posts talking about adding 0x526 or something like that into the value for the immobilizer on an Evo 8 ECU.

I wonder if I combine the 2 sets of instructions if that would delete the immobilizer from the ECU?

03lances Mar 24, 2010 01:08 AM

Have you checked out the dsm forums? I am sure someone has figured out how to disable the immobilizers on them

jforward5 Mar 24, 2010 12:07 PM

Apparently on those forums they say you can't flash the 2001 ECU...They say the only known Flashable ECU's are the 98/99 eclipse ECU's.

I wonder if I should see if the salvage yard I got this ECU from has the 98/99 ECU and will swap with me...

I'm DONE!! :D

Okay I'm looking to do a 4g64 swap. would you be able to give me a list of items I have to get for the swap? if possible. thanks. I have an 03 lancer es auto. with the swap will I have to switch to manual?

qaz003 Jun 22, 2010 06:22 PM

^^^^ you're kidding right??????

jforward5 Jun 23, 2010 07:31 PM

I've heard that the automatic swap can be done but I personally wouldn't attempt that since you will need to open your transmission and swap out the differential gear. An automatic transmission has so many parts in it that I wouldn't even know where to begin if something fell out of place. So in my opinion switch to a Manual transmission, but your going to need more parts than if your car was already a manual.

I would first read darkmitsu's 4g64 swap and then you will have an idea of the items you will need to make the swap. However keep in mind you will need all the accessories from the 4g64 engine, power steering pump, alternator. The only accessory you wont need is your a/c compressor.

Also replace the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, and timing belt while you have the engine out since those places will be most accessible at that time, and who knows when you will have that kind of opportunity again.

And be very patient. Though this swap can be done in a weekend I recommend very highly taking your time and spreading the process out over at least a months time. That way you can make sure the transmission is done right, and any little things you might want to do while the engine is out can be done, cam, new lash adjusters, ect...

And most of all read read read and re-read everything about this. It is easy but not something to be rushed if your inexperienced.

good job, man ... Thanks for the props , I had all the stuff to do the dohc swap to mine but backed out , It cost me about 1500$ in parts and I did more digging and some people said I would have problems with valves hitting the pistons some said I would not so rather than spend 600-1000 on pistons and rods I backed out and sold off the stuff. I think It may be money better spent getting a 4g63t and putting it to use on the eclipse tranny in theory it is possible and will probably be the next thing going in my lancer .

I had purchased the kia optima head which has a larger combustion chamber compared to a evo head it was something in the nature of 10-15cc difference which would lead to a lower compression ratio but still would be to high of a compression ratio to safely turbo your better off turboing with the sohc head.

you may want to talk to the guy RPM_Ruff_Ryder he has the sticky thread on the board and was the first to have a 4g64 swap done, and I think im the second ,bvasquez12 is the third , and you are the fourth .

Rpmruffryder had a custom cut cam for his car and put down nice numbers 160ish to the ground , he said something about being able to have more made pm him. He also had intake exhaust and headers that is quite nice considering mine put down 105hp/125trq to the wheels on stock exhaust, stock airbox , stock exhaust manifold , and really no tune running a straight evo flash with just maf tables adjusted and injectors size adjusted. btw those who dont know a stock 2g turbo eclipse puts down 165hp/165trq to the wheels even though factory rates them at 210/210 , to the crank and to the wheels are two different numbers guys...

jforward5 Jul 23, 2010 08:01 PM

yea im not sure how much mine is putting down but it pulls sick hard. If your a passenger your looking for something to hang onto, and driving it if you hit the gears just right you feel the effects of what ever lil G's the thing is producing. Man this car is really fun to drive! I will post a pull video soon ;)
