Going to the track...

Today at work I got invited to go to the local drag stip with some friends. One of them decided to challenge me for a pretty good amount of money. I personally don't think the race would be much of a challenge for me, but my opinion may be slightly biased . That's why I wanted to get a slightly less biased opinion. You can see my mods in my sig (plus a B&M short shifter that I installed this morning). The vehicle I'm considering racing for money is a 1993 GMC S15 automatic with the 4.3L vortec V6. Only mod is custom dual exhaust...what do yall think? Should I take the bet??

How much money? I ask because 1. It'd suck to lose a friend over money and/or a car race and 2. I don't think it's going to be an easy race for either of you, but you'll probably lose. I've never seen an S15 try to race, but I have seen the Lancer go, and I think any V6 I can think of would put an NA Lancer in fear. Honestly, he'll probably smoke you, but that's not to say it's terribly unlikely you'll win.

the vortech is the turbo version right? If so just cut off your own *** and hand it to him now... unless he stops by the drag strip on the way home from Home Depot with a load of cement and wood for a new deck.

Even if the vortech is not the turbo version, the 4.3L rocks 230-265TQ with 160-195HP (per http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/U...arreviewspecs/ ) so I think you're gonna lose.

He suggested $200...keep in mind, I'm 18 and work at a grocery store...lol...so that's a pretty decent amount for me to win or lose in a matter of seconds. As for your first point, I don't think that would be a problem, but I guess you never know. I've ridden in the truck and wasn't really impressed. I always like to research my comptetion, but I haven't been able to find anything other than HP and torque.

don't do it anyway. There are enough reasons to hate your coworkers without losing $200 to one of them

It not the turbo version...and as for the HP and Torque numbers you gave, Alchemist., what does the range mean? I figured the first number was automatic and second was manual? Am I correct? And yes, the Vortech is an excellent engine. I've beat it pretty handidly in 95' blazer form, but that's a lot more weight.

AT/MT was my guess, too, but I don't know for sure- that's just what I was able to find in a 3 minute google search.

Yeah, unfortunately that's about the only information I've been able to locate as well.

I've driven my Cousin's Sonoma w/ the 4.3 and it had nice grunt off the line but ran out of steam pretty quick. It'll be close but I think you would win in a full 1/4-mile race.

Don't bother. Save that $200 for something useful. If it was $10, then no biggie, but $200 is quite a chunk of change for even me, and I would say I have a pretty decent income.

Exactly - with your mods ( your car is an '03 like mine ) you should run low 16's. If i remember correctly, the vortechs will pop 15 second quarters at least. You will be better off saving the 200 for something else

What's the point? Old people don't compete in weightlifting competitions.

if you REALLY want to race him, tell him you'll race for the price of admission to the track. That way you're only out about $25 instead of $200.

what everyone else is saying is true a N/A lancer doesn't pull very much. So the odds are that your going to lose, dont want to put you down or anything but its the truth. Unless you were turbo I wouldnt race him.
