I'm going to look into some things more on Monday. Sounds like there are enough of us having problems.

my paint has been chipping since it had only 9 miles on it....from the dealer to work.....so bad handling i dont think so.....bad water, rocks, dirt ...etc....if they made the paint better then maybe we wouldnt have to worry about it!!!

just looked at my trunk lid two more spots.. in addition to the 4 -6 on the bumper.
they all look like fingerprint size white blouches .. like if someone with a nervous tick kept rubbing at the paint till it came off.. grrrr 5 month old car and needs to be repainted allready WTF ???

my 70,000 mile Nissan has less chips, on the hood and front clip has the most with the chips and rust on the trunk lid corners identical to those shown in the pics in the begining of the thread.

car
paint

PS I only have 10,000 miles and drive down side streets to get to work

hey, people, has anyone ever went back to the dealer while their car has the test pipe on and engine check light on? Anyone know what would the dealer do? I have paint chip problems, but don't know how they'd deal with my car....are they gonna turn me down just because of all the stuff I did to the lancer?

I read somewhere where the newer cars use a water-based paint (environmental stuff) and the new paints chips more easily. This affects all new US cars including BMW etc.

My 96 Neon has much much better paint which never chipped despite driving on gravel etc

Not all new cars are painted with waterborn paints.
BMW, actually, have been playing with power coated basecoat AND clearcoat. Pretty cool stuff.
Waterborn paints are relatively new and very much a PITA to deal with, though. I doubt they are using that on these cars; too expensive.

just got off the phone with a service guy at the dealership and he said that the chips are are not warranted by due to the fact of the chips are a result of 'road debris'(bull!!)...and i told him about all the problems with the OZ's and the yellow fading and everyone else's problems with the rust, spots and chipping...but i have an ES...so on fri i am meeting with the manager of the dealership to discuss the pin-hole-size rust spots, the pin-hole-size black spots and the rust from the chips(the paint is taken all the way down past primer stuff)...so i will update fri after i meet the guy

i also will support the lawsuit

Apr 2, 2003 11:13: I thought I'd copy my post to this thread. I have my original message in the "https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=17738&highlight=class+acti on" " Asking all Lancer owners with paint issues to please read."

2003 OZ Rally Lancer 5700 Miles [Lightning Yellow]

Mar 31, 2003 2:05 PM:
Paint chips on side skirts under Driver side door and Passenger side door. The Warranty covered this problem. My car is in the shop now for the paint chip problem, hopefully I'll be able to pick it up today. I'll reply with the what, where, and why's after I get the car back.

Apr 2, 2003 10:32 AM:
I went to pick up my Lancer from Service Center on Apr 1 5PM. They had repainted the sideskirts. It looks like they removed, repainted, then reattached them. I noticed glue on the seam. I forgot to take a few [before pics] of the chips on the sideskirts, but I'll definitely get [after pics].

Apr 2, 2003 10:32 AM:
I told the Estimator and Service Manager about this message thread and a few others, of which I had printed out and was holding in my hands at the time. They said that they have had many paint chipping issues with the US Lancer, and have repaired a lot of them.

Apr 2, 2003 10:32 AM:
I then asked them what they would do if the paint were to ever fade. The Estimator I was working with was not sure. I then told them that I had noticed a spot on the top left side of the trunk. I then showed both the Estimator and the Service Manager the circular paint fade spot (see photo below). The Service Manager said that this is definitely covered by the warranty. While we were looking at the car I said that since it had recently been raining that I was not able to see any other spots [chips / fades / problems]. They said: " We will take it inside dry it off and take a flashlight to the car looking for any other paint problems, and that the car should be ready in 3 days." The also agreed with me that the "US Lancer has major paint issues due to CHEAP PAINT"

Apr 2, 2003 10:32 AM:
So now I await for my car to come back from the shop. I'll post [after pics] on my vehicle site on Friday/Saturday and what they did to fix the paint problems]

well today i gave my car a good wash, and besides the sideskirts peeling, i have about a hundred chips on my hood, a few spots on the edges of my trunk and doors and the black of my doors also. i would definatly support a lawsuit.

I just purchased an EVO for a development car (black) and I can confirm that the EVO's get low quality paint as well. I have already started discussing things with a few of my painters. Anyone have color suggestions?
