Car dealerships are all going to go to hell
Do not, I repeat DO NOT do business with NW Mitsubishi in EVERETT, WA.
A couple of months ago, I got a deal for MSRP from the "bastards." Then a week or two ago, following up, they told me they could no longer honor that, since there was a new general manager. I spoke with the new GM. Basically, he's your typical greedy, scum-sucking POS type of person you would expect would work their way up the ranks at an automobile dealership. He went out of his way to say he "just couldn't" promise MSRP. What the hell is stopping him? Well, the bastards obviously don't give a **** about P.R., or they would have stopped themselves to think about whether a few thousand bucks was worth the negative publicity they (I) would generate. You really gotta wonder.
Anyway, I was by no means sure I was going to get the EVO, being enamored with the STi. But I wanted to keep the possibility open, and definitely would like to drive one (it would be best to drive the two and choose the one I like best - doubt that will happen).
So please try not to support the bastards.

keep yer hopes up man....that's just one dealer.
Seriously....I'd have said "Are you an idiot? If you sell this car to me for MSRP...I would have told everyone I know what a great dealership this is. Now I'm telling everyone what a crappy dealership this is"
That's just stupid business, plain and simple. That's the first thing I learned as a salesman....to go out of your way to make sure the customer know that he/she is being taken care right. That in-turn translates into the customer telling other potential customers what a great person/company you are. Right now the company that I work for relies on newspaper adds to bring in business. Our ultimate goal is to provide a customer experience that brings in customers even when we don't have an add....from refferals.

Damn, Hooby, where were you when I was on the phone?
Good advice. But seriously, the guy had his head stuck so far up his butt ... (ummm, fill in your favorite way to finish that sentence). It was unbelievable! I still can't believe they were that idiotic.
The thing is, and I kid you not, they were the only dealership in WA or OR, and I mean ONLY (I wrote or phoned them ALL) to agree to MSRP.
Anyway, thanks for the support. I did write a contact at MMSA about this. We'll see what he has to say.
Damn, I love the EVO and the STi. Why can't I just have one of each?

Thanks Danc, I am from Seattle and had called them a week ago and left my name. The one salesman asked if I wanted to come leave a deposit, then stopped, and asked someone something, and said he couldnt yet. They seemed flaky, so I am hopeing that Walkers in Renton ends up good. We might have to all get together and see if we have buying power. Hope to hear more on your search, I will keep mine posted.
thanks Danc
thanks Danc
I worked at a Harley Davidson shop for about 4 years in the mid 90's. At one time our shop could get $5000 over retail on some models. Most models got at least $2000 over retail. You could say times were good. When my boss picked up the Harley franchise in the early 80's, things were not so rosy and he had trouble making a profit at all on bike sales. We looked back at those times and were glad to make it as far as we had. Looking to the future you never know what will happen next. We watched some of our competing Harley-Davidson dealers try to sell bikes at retail. They would get waiting lists 18 months long. Our shop would take a list of people interested in a particular model/color. When the bike came in we would start going down the list calling people. If they were interested and had the money, done deal. If they didn’t like our asking price, we would go on to the next person. What does this have to do with the EVOVII? Well, the Mitsubishi dealers finally have a car that is really in demand. They will not be giving it away at msrp. Many senior sales people are on commission, the more they sell the car for the more money in their pocket at the end of the day. Unless you are buddies with the owner or sales guy, they will try to take you for all they can. If for some reason the dealer does sell at retail, know what will happen? Entrepreneurs will buy the car for retail and throw it up on E-bay to make a profit. The only way I see anyone here getting an EVOVII at or below retail would be one of the following conditions:
1. Mitsubishi imports more than 15,000 units of the GSR in 2003...or
2. The MSRP for a GSR is over $35,000...or
3. We get a 230 hp GTA that sells for $30,000
The only other thing I could suggest at this point is don’t **** off the dealer. If you say something like, ‘I’m going to tell all my friends that you suck if you don’t give me a silver GSR for MSRP the day it comes in’, he will very quickly find a more likeable and friendly customer to sell the car too. When it comes to low import numbers, be ready to pay a price, and kiss some ***.
Good luck to you all.

Sorry to hear about your experience at NW Mitsubishi, but ALL the dealers in the Northwest WA and OR operate way differently than most dealerships elsewhere. Go to any dealership and look at that wonderful markup we call the dealer markup. The ones in this area jack up the price waaaayyy tooo much. Just look at what happened with the PT Cruiser. They jacked up the price by 5-10K... why? Because people would pay for it because, most, not all mind you, have no idea what the car is worth and think that it's a good thing or don't realize they are even being ripped off. Once Mitsu starts bring the EVOs over the dealer mark ups are going to be out of sight. Thats why I am going to wait a year or so for the market to come back down and then purchase my new EVO from Idaho. Just a word of advice, if they say they are going to match MSRP, get it in writing!! Never take a salesman at their word because its junk. Have the GM write up a note saying that he is going to match MSRP on the SPECIFIC EVO. That way when you order it and they say that they can't match MSRP, you have it in writing and you can go to the proper authorities... but with the autombile industry who knows if it would even hold water? I'd ask a lawyer and see what he says.
Good luck!
Good luck!
I may be a touch off base here and feel free to throw a bucket of reality on me but why not just go through carsdirect.com or some other direct car dealership? If I remember correctly in this months consumer reports there is an article on just this. People that order there car from the web pay much much less then a dealership.
On a side note I got my last car from imotors.com before they went belly up, the whole experience was a walk.

PT cruisers sold for $5000-$10000 over retail because of the law of supply and demand. Not because people did not know what they were worth. MSRP is clearly posted on all new automobiles sold. Wishing a car is going to be sold for msrp is one thing, forcing the dealer to sell it to you for MSRP is another. Now that dealers are seeing the EVO hype and consumer interest, they are going to make the most of it. People will buy the EVO but they will probably pay through the nose for a while.

Got it back in October
Hooby,
Sounds like your dealership is cool. Keep stoping in so they know your face if you can. Keep reminding them that your expecting to pay retail. Most of all be friendly with everyone there. I hope you can pull it off. I know here in San Jose, the motorcyle shops will advertise retail prices and then add the 'dealer prep', 'shipping', 'uncrating' blah, blah, blah. Just something to watch out for.

Speedy,
Glad I could steer you away from NWM. Best of luck in your search. You'll probably have to go east or far south into CA to get MSRP.
Turbo442,
I hear what you are saying, however, my main point isn't that they should be charging MSRP or less. That's a whole 'nother topic. My point was that they promised MSRP, promised to send the P.O. out with the GM's signature, then never sent out the P.O., which would have given me something in writing. Then when the new GM comes in he refuses to honor the agreement I had with the previous GM. That's not the same as refusing to sell for MSRP. That's agreeing to MSRP then renegging. Regardless of market pressures to stay in business, or maybe even all the more relevant, they should honor an agreement with a customer. In this case, it might have cost them $3k - $5k I'm guessing. Seems like a small price to pay to maintain their integrity. I always thought integrity was what the dealerships espoused as being essential to their business. And in fact, really, any business involving direct sales contact with customers. NW Mitsubishi sold their integrity for the price of one marked-up EVO VII.
