yea, i'm real insecure. i'm not putting you down, that was truly a dumb question. you really thought at 70+ you would get hiway mileage as per window sticker? if u answer yes, revert back to my 1st post.

my crap gas mileage

I've got an '02 es, with AEM cold air intake (which I didn't like so I ripped off the cold air part and made it into ram air), I've also got some 16's with low profs. obviously I've just started to upgrade it... my prob is, I'm getting terrible fuel economy as of late. I'm running 93 octane out of it, and I put in a new fuel filter. does anybody know of anything I can do to bost my mileage a little bit.
(when I'm on the interstate, cruising at about 70, I"m pushin like 3300 rpms, do all lancers do this? or is it something to do with my wheels being a slightly smaller radius than my stocks)

thanks josh

I get about 200 miles out of a full tank...maybe it's that 93 octane.

I donno if you got stick or automatic, but try to stay in 35 MPH or 55 MPH.
They're the best if you want to save gas.
Other than that check if your air filter is not clogged by some ****.
I got my 02 OZ stick and on the interstate it could definitale use a 6th gear.

IF you want good gasmilage then get rid of those custom wheels and buy a standerd. Those wheels way more then a 15 or a 14 (whatever is stock on a es) would and that is unsprung weight. That has a double weight effect on load you are putting on your engine. I know when I took off my OZ stock 15" and put on my Eagle Allow 17" I lost almost a second on my 1/4 time. But hey they look nice and I dont race everyday.

Higher octane will not improve fuel economy. Octane is a rating of resistance to detonation. Nothing more, nothing less. If your car isn't at risk for knock (turbocharged, supercharged or using nitrous) then don't bother with it. The only thing it will effect is your wallet.

Your car's ECU is smart. It will learn to adjust shift points to the way you drive. If you drive aggressively it will shift aggressively, waiting for higher RPMs before it changes gears. With my 5-speed with bolt-ons (similar to yours) I was getting from 280-330 from completely ful to fumes. If you want to improve fuel economy simply reset your ECU and drive less aggressively. The ECU will relearn everything and remap itself to better suit your driving style. Automatics use more fuel than manual transmissions to begin with, and once the ECU learns to shift higher in the RPMs it will not unlearn that unless you stop driving that way for a significant period of time or reset it and drive like grandma.

Also as Danno mentioned heavier wheels or tires that are low on air can adversely effect your mileage. Check your tire pressure, and if you're using aftermarket wheels, get used to it. They tend to be heavier than the stock 15" steels. Extra rotational mass means extra work to turn which means more fuel consumption.

First of all, why are you using 93 octane gas? No offense, but it doesn't do anything for your car unless you have a reflashed ECU or a piggyback. Your engine hasn't been tuned to run on higher octane gas so your just wasting your money. I drive on OZ 03 and get about 30 mpg. I hit 3300 RPM when I go over 80, more like 85. I'm running with an AEM CAI, Magnaflow Catback and stock wheels and tires. Wheel size might be the culprit. I used this calculator when I bought my wheels and tires (which I will get installed hopefully tonight)

I just went through two tanks of gas completely highway mileage, cruising between 70mph and 80mph. When I'm at 75 my RPMs are around 3200. I got 34 miles to the gallon on this trip, which was 720 miles round trip. It was around 100 miles per 1/4 of a tank.

i have 18 x 7.5 with some 225/40..AEM cold air, magnaflow cat back, bosch plat. +4, and a 300+ lbs sound system...i drive both highway and inner streets about 50/50 and i end up with approx. 260 miles to the tank. on the freeway the rpms is 3200 @ 79 mph. i fill up a tank at around 9-10 gal using only 87 octane. i use mobil 1 performance driving 15-50w oil.

weight of stock OZ compared to my 18 x 7.5
oz- 38.5 lbs
Axis wheels with 225/40 tires- 41 lbs.

i don't think that extra 15 lbs will hurt my mileage thar greatly.

how does everyone's RPMs stay so low? Mine is running 3000 when Im at 60, 3500 at 65! I still get about 28-30mpg, but still, I'd be doing better if my RPMs were lower at higher speeds. My car idles around 700RPM, what about all yours?

I'm guessing you have a 5-spd. They have automatic transmissions. Either that or your wheels' and tires' rolling diameters are significantly different.
