Anything I should know when buying a Radar detector?
What to watch out for or anything like that?
My bro's mad after getting his first speeding ticket(hes been driving for about 6 years)
He's mad not cause he got a ticket.. but for getting a ticket doing a 67 in a 50 zone
(kilometres people) He works at A&B Sound so he could get a deal on a nice one.
Its funny when we pulled over the cop was all like 'What is this like 400hp?? is it one of those evolutions??' (probably trying to write us up for having an evo too) my brothers like 'err.. no. its 120hp.. its the baby brother..'
Then the cops all like '......oh well, nice looking car though'

basically if u dont want a ticket ur gonna have to spend about 300 bucks on a lasar jamer most cops dont use a radar nemore, just laser and theres no way to detect that unless ur lucky and guns somebody in front of u. theres a couple companies that will pay for a ticket if u get one w/ their detector so good luck
Dam, never thought of that. Are the lasers those things that look like little cameras on a tripod?
Edit: Did some research.. They apparently use something called a Lidar which detectors are pretty useless against..

there is one thing you should know when buying a radar detector. do not look at the price, because it will pay for itself.
for example, think $200 is a lot to pay for a radar detector? well, if it saves you from a $200 ticket, then it has already paid for itself, so it's worth it.
i'm not one to talk though, since i got a whistler for $14 on ebay. it works though, and has saved me!

Everything you're going to read can be summed up quickly. The two leading detectors are the Valentine 1 and the Escort 8500 and which one is better or worse will never be decided because so many people swear by each. Bels I've also heard good things about.
Radar detectors are very good at detecting radar and the better ones will do a better job at filtering out false signals and detecting the police radar at longer distances. Most will also detect lidar, which is similar to radar, using infrared laser. Laser is by far the most difficult to detect because even at a 1000 feet distance, a beam of lidar is only a few feet wide. It's fast, can't be detected unless it's aimed at you or very close. It doesn't splash as much as radar.
If people tell you that everyone's using lidar now, so a radar detector is useless, they're wrong. Some areas are using laser almost exclusively (up here in the northeast for example Massachusetts and Connecticut state police all use laser). Lots of places around the country though, especially city/town police are using radar. I've driven all over this country and can vouch for the fact that laser is not nearly as popular as radar.
And finally, no radar detector will protect you from stupidity. If you're speeding too much and you know a cop would pull you over for it, keep an eye out - you're going to have better luck avoiding a ticket if you can react more quickly than he can tag you.
All that being said, don't bother with a cheap detector - too many false positives and not enough reliable signal detection. You'll learn to ignore it. Get a nice one if you will. I would if I could afford it personally. They do help, but they aren't foolproof. And as for the benefit that some will pay a ticket if you get caught, that's a small consolation - the cost of a ticket is in insurance, not the ticket.

All the cops around my place use those little camcorder looking things directed against traffic. Im pretty sure those are lasers.
50kph so you must've been within Canadian city limit? If you're going to speed in the city, chances are radar detectors won't do you any good whatsoever. I know most Canadian cities have some rather ridiculously low speed limit (I'm from Vancouver) but going 70kph vs 50kph really doesn't save you any time going from point A to point B anyway. My suggestion is to go slow.
On the freeway, however, radar detector makes a HUGE difference. I used to have a Bel 800 series which had all bands radar as well as laser detection. It had saved me at the very least 50 times on US interstates over a 4 year time span. In most cases it won't save you if you're the first to pass a speed trap because by the time your radar goes off you're already clocked. You just have to be smart and pace a fast car in front of you, drop back about 1/8 of a mile or so, and when he passes a patrol unit or a speed trap, the police radars him, and your radar picks up the signal.
The best two ways to avoid tickets:
1/. Obey traffic law
2/. Don't get singled out
