auto's- what happens when u shift L,2,3, D?

Hey, so on an automatic transmission, it reads " P, R, N, D, 3, 2, L" or whatever. what harm can come from actually shifting through those gears, L, 2, 3 and D? I've heard you can really screw your transmission up, but i've done it a few times, just wanted to know if the possiblity is very high?

We met again! It will make it feel sporty to the driver but has no real advantage. I blew up two auto trann.s that way, only took about 30k each time soo.... If you want to shift, should of got a 5spd.

An auto transmission is already engineered and controlled by computer to shift at the optimal RPM anyways.. It just messes it up if you try to shift like a manual. Thats why they make auto's and manual's.

the man's right

The ONLY way it want harm it is if, you shift it when your cars shifts when it's in D.

Like say your in D, you start out in first. Now lets say, you start to go and your car shifts at 20 Mph. thats when you should shift it when your doing it manualy.

okay. ive done it a few times, i guess i should stop. its not like i race around thinking i have a stick, its just ometimes, i need more speed out of my car, so i have to drop into lower gears..cause the pickup and throttle response isnt all that great. not a lot of money for headers or anything.yet.. but Thanks guys!

If you occasionally click down a gear for some HP, not really a big problem.

It's the folks that think they can go 1-2-3-D from every stop sign that blow out trannies.

dont mean to steal your thread but is it alright if I drive around in 3, when I'm around UCONN its nothing but hills, is that safe as long as I dont push my rpm over like 3500.

MitsuLancerTO May 14, 2005 10:49 PM

there's certain speed and rpm limits when your using the lower gears. usually though you want to use these lower gears for steady driving...like in snow...when in lower gears your wheels don't tend to spin as much as if you were in the normal drive. you will use more fuel though as these gears usually stay on 1, 2, and 3.

You could probably find out the max speeds and rpms for these in your manual.

Heh. I was thinking the same thing. I think he'll be happyer if he had a stick.

Marques May 15, 2005 10:58 AM

so if you aren't supposed to do it then why do they even have the 2 and 3 there? why not just have p r d n and thats it.
