Auto in nuetral Q's

I searched and couldn't find anything that helps, and I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this. But here: I have an auto, and I was wondering if it was ok or even saved any gas by shifting into nuetral on downhills or instead of using the brake when entering a lwer speed limit zone. Basically, any time I know I won't use the gas pedal for more than a few seconds, I put it in nuetral. Does this hurt the engine at all when shifting back and forth between nuetral and Drive? And yes I know, "get (or should have gotten) a stick."

well i doubt it would help at all to shift into neutral except for making it go down the hill faster and making you have to use ur brakes more. its not like its sucking up anymore air if its in gear so it also shouldnt be adding more fuel. i think you should be better off leaving it in drive.

Acctually It's not very good for your car, esspecially the drive train

^ok thats what i was wondering if it was hurting anything or not. but i do think fuel would be different cause rather than going down the hill in Drive at 2000 rpms, it would be in nuetral at idle rpms. but ok thats all i needed to know.

i thought it was bad to...dosent it "kick" back into the gear from nuetral?

just let your foot off the pedal... more practical and does the same thing. or find a sport tronic sytem

when i get money for a sport tronic shifter system i'll get one, i want one though. but i havent had it kick into gear unless right after i put it back in drive i step on the gas, but usually i raise the rpms a little bit so it matches up first.

level ten sells them for $500 or something around that area....except you press buttons for the gears instead of actually shifting

ok, everyone keeps saying they sell them, and they do for mitsubishis, but they don't list the lancer on there. but i do know that someone here has boughten it and it works. how well? i dont know. but then shouldnt you get a torque converter too?

kareem had one for his lancer, he said all he bought was that and he could shift at anytime and it never shifted for him when he switched to it and he could go all the way to fuel cut off if he didnt shift

drucea Oct 31, 2005 02:54 PM

yeah thats who it was. but i know when i shift mine manually, i cant shift down to like 1st gear doing 60 mph, but when starting off in 1st i can go up to fuel cut off with out it shifting but i havent stayed at that for too long to see if itll shift.

since i also drive an auto i was thinking of saving the cash for the sportronic trans. and also the torque convertor. i havnt heard of anyone who has bought a t/c yet. but i havnt searched, but their is a thread on a shop in calli that sells them. i dont know if their is a core exchange program or anything. but if you buy a sportstronic, id go ahead and buy the t/c also. does the auto shift faster than a "regular" manual driver? alot of auto's have fast shift times. but i only keep my car in neutral at stop lights and such. only when im at a complete stop, and im going to be their for awhile. just dont go 50mph+ and shoot it into reverse on accident, its only a click away.

drucea Nov 1, 2005 12:51 AM

yeah but you can switch from drive to neutral and back without pushing the button so thats how i make sure i dont throw it in reverse. does kareem also have a torque converter? And ive heard that autos can shift faster and keep the HP consistant throughout the gears better than a manual driver.

i think im gonna buy the shift tronic thing on the 15th of this month.. but i gotta buy my pulley from rrm.. so if not then dec 15th... is there anyone on here that speaks to kareem?? if so ask him if the sport tronic application did he get. i think the 2nd gen automatic eclipse uses the same tranny that we use.. maybe a mirage too. so maybe he used a different aplication??
