it is a stock resonator, it is right beneath the gas tank. although u are in cali so u have 2 cats anyway.

The other cat is in your exhaust manifold

2 Cats on PZEV cars is to help the car meet California emissions regulations for the PZEV qualification. It helps complete the chemical reactions in the exhaust to reduce exhaust emissions beyond what is possible with a single cat. Technically speaking, the first cat is normally called a "pre-cat", and the second one is the main cat. Many of the after market performance companies provide Hi-Flow versions of both. I've been eyeballing performance cats from Magnaflow... So, it is possible to build a "high performance" exhaust and remain 100% emissions legal in Cali.

We aren't the only cars with multiple cats. A friend of mine with a SAAB 9-2x (Subaru WRX wagon) had 3 cats on his car in stock configuration.

well daam... i thought cars had only 1( well my last car had just 1 cat ). i guess thats a mandated in cali only...
i was thinking of getting a catback system, but didnt know how that would play out... is it possible to get a catback ( from magnaflow or whoever ) and have those 2 oem peices still in their stock locations and stay leagal?

Mine had two cats as well, it's an 2002-2006 lancer thing. As said, one is in the exhaust mani and the other is downstream after the downpipe. A catback does not replace a cat, hence the name.

If not go somewhere else. I am pretty sure that all cars now have at least two cats on them. As Rock said, the one you are questioning is a resonator.

Injen's SES "header" back exhaust is supposed to be C.A.R.B. certified (California legal). Alternatively, any ~competent~ muffler shop will be able to custom build an exhaust for you that will be California legal.
