did you guys just not put any oil on the o-ring and screw buying a special tool.

i did the first oil change on my 09 and couldnt get that sucker off, got a hammer and a flat head tapped into it then turn lol

I think he's saying you have to lube the o-ring on the oil filter so it doesn't get stuck on

Had the same problem when I did the first oil change on my girlfriend's Fit. Same problem, same fix lol, cept I used a Phillips and not a flat head.

Many factory oil filters are a pain in the ass to get off. They never oil the filter ring from the factory, quicker assembly time!

I still need to do my oil change (due at end of next month). SRT-4 was a pain though. Couldn't get the oil plug off until the filter was off and the filter was mounted horizontal with the car. Of course no oil wrench would actually fit over it like that. I had to get a screwdriver and a hammer to get the thing off, all the while it's spewing oil all over me since I can't get the plug out until the filter was off. Yup...good design.

All the retail factory Mitsubishi oil filters come pre-lubed from the factory. When you open the package, the filter comes with a clear plastic film covering the o-ring to keep the o-ring lubed until you install it. Not sure if the factory uses pre-lubed oil filters in their engine assembly process though. You'll find almost all new vehicles will be a pain to remove the first filter, regardless of manufacturer. They're installed quite tight and it's not like doing an oil change, the filter is installed onto a bone-dry surface with no old oil residue. If you use the same brand of filter all the time, you can get an oil filter cup to fit the filter. The cups work great. You attach them to a 3/8 ratchet, and it makes removing the filter a breeze. :mitsu:
