When the body shop doesn't do their job

So it's starting to get cold up here in Wisconsin. Most of the day is during the 40s now. Today I was at work and tried ot get into a funky parking spot that is up on a "hill" of it's own. I didn't think I'd make it but I figured I'd try anyway. I eased forward and ended up hearing the front bumper hit the asphalt, so I backed up. Scraping probably a whopping 2" forward and then back again. As I moved away to park elsewhere I noticed something grey on the pavement. Checked my car when I parked and lo and behold the paint went crazy and cracked all to hell (see below). Ends up being that the body shop never prepped the plastic. Never cleaned off the mold release, never sanded it down or anything before applying primer. So the primer and everything popped clean when I rubbed today. Going to talk to him tomorrow to try and get him to do it as warranty work. We'll see how that goes. But a 500 dollar paint job better be warranted against that kind of crap.

damn that sucks..... i think my buddy was saying they have to add that "flex" stuff too right? man that looks like poor prep work. they should definately redo it.

sdhotwn Oct 1, 2003 09:38 PM

he told me that he put the flex stuff in. I think he probably did...but when you look at the bare plastic you can see that they didn't do any surface prep. There is no sanding or anything evident... looks like raw fresh out of the mold plastic. So yeah they screwed up and I'll be all over him to get it fixed.

still working on getting these damage fixed. I basically have two body shops pointing fingers at each other right now. I have the original guy saying he didn't do anything wrong and the piece is prepped right and he wants full money to fix the whole thing... And that it is the other body shops fault (they did some minor work to repair some crazing from when another guy hit my car...) and that they baked the bumper and caused the mold release to pull up and get under the paint and cause adhesion problems. And then the body shop that did the repair work is trying to tell me that the car sitting in the sun would get that hot by itself (160 degrees... I think not!!!) and that if they had released mold release that their paint work would have looked like crap... and blah blah blah..

So then I chewed out the insurance company that funded the repair work from before.. and now they are looking in to it and are going to see if they can remedy the situation and so forth. So we'll see. I have to give Progressive that they are pretty cool about most stuff and fair. I don't know if my insurance would work as hard for me as they seem to be. But yeah... as of right now.. unless the insurance company pulls something together for me I'm looking at about another 450 bucks to get it fixed as the body shop will have to strip it completely and redo everything. So that means that I'll have paid the 375 for the bumper itself, 400 for the first paint job, 400 for a second paint job, and that doesn't include another 300 ish for the repair work that the insurance company did. So that means I'll be riding around with a freakin 1500 dollar bumper.. pimpin eh? :apimp:

Later all!
