Creaking sound near rear wheel? Help!

Hey everyone! For the last week or so, I've noticed this horribly annoying creaking coming from the back of my car. I thought it was something creaking in the trunk, but when I shake the car around, I hear it coming from around the Rear Right wheel area. What could this be? Is it something a little WD-40 could fix? What should I DO?

Thanks all!

I tried, along with the mechanic who put on my new tires, to stop the creaking, but it's just getting worse. What's causing this? Is it corrosion? If so, is that covered under the corrosion warranty? I just moved my car out to LA from Connecticut, where there's tons of salt and crap on the roads...the mechanic said he'd seen al ot of that coming from the east coast. Any ideas?

The dealer around here said he'd have to charge me 85 bucks just to LOOK for the problem. wtf...

Take it to the dealership. Have them check your control arms. They've been known to be problematic with the '02 and '03 Lancers.

There is no reason they should be charging you for in warranty diagnosis. Take it to another dealership and/or contact your local Better Business Bureau.

warranty

Well, it's got 40,000 miles on it...does that make a difference?
I'll check with another dealer, in the meantime...thanks!

Well for '02, basic coverage is 3yrs/36k, so in essence if they want to be picky and very unhelpful, you might have to pay for the work. However, the idea of having to pay for a diagnosis is bullcrap. Finding another dealer is a good idea as was posted. If you're just outside the warranty window, many times a dealer may "goodwill" a repair depending on whether or not their mfg is willing to reimburse the dealer for the repair work. At least that's what I saw happen at a Subie / Mazda dealership I used to work at while in college.

Mine does this too. I guess it's about time to head on into the dealer for some good inspection time.

actually, you're not too far off the bushings on your rear sway bar are the rubber "donuts" that the sway bar is held in place by. There should be some on a rod going into the control arm (near the axle) and also some held in by a U bracket further inside. try putting the grease inside the holes and see if that stops it.
