Tire rubbing... what should I do?

I bought a used 2002 Lancer ES a while ago. Came with nice tires and rims. The only thing is that they rub with too much weight in the back (two passengers) or I make fast turns. Currently the lancer has Falken Ziex ZE 326 225/40zr18.

Now my question is, what can I do about this? Can i put narrower tires on? or should i just wait to replace tires and rims.

Not sure what kind of rims they are(sorry newb to all this)...

thanx in advance.

Get 215/35/18 size tires
Thats what i have and i have zero rubbing on my oz.

yeah i got my ES with nice rims and toyo tires and everytime i do a very sharp turn....they rub the wheelwells.....any ideas?...will this hurt?

thanks, I'm gonna post the info in my tire rubbing research thread in this forum. Madcellman, what size do you have that rubs?

And I agree, 215/35/18 is a better choice. The size you have is huge for any Lancer.

According to Tire Rack, anything wider than 205 series will rub, hence why your 225s are rubbing. I think 215 will work most of the time, but if your going to drive agressively, 205 is the widest you should go. I run 205-45-17's on my car, and I have no rub issues, even during autocross. (thats with Eibach springs too....)

215-40-17 dont rub at all.

gabdala Mar 25, 2004 11:44 AM

Now if I were to get 215/35/18's would i have to change wheels?

I believe i have some sort of Advanti Racing ones....not sure what kind or anything. Is there any way I can find out the exact size of my wheel?

thanx

Quik Q, The numbers 205 and 215... does that mean the lowprofile of the tire.,... whats the lowest you can go with 17

Melaz425 Mar 25, 2004 12:20 PM

205-215-225 etc. is the widtch of the tire.... 55-45-40-35 etc. is the profile.

I got 205-45-17 and they rub/hit when i go up my driveway. Im also looking to drop my car with skunk2 coilovers so what am i working with?

Remember that as the tire gets wider with the same profile, it actually does get taller. The profile is what percent of the width is the height.

Can i fit other size tires on my 18" rims. Like changing the width from 225 to 215 and less profile like to 35 from 40. If so can i change this without changing the 18"rims... thanks

gabdala, check the sticky at the top of this forum (US Lancer tires, wheels, brakes and suspension), titled everything you need to know about rims and tires. It gives you a whole list of tire sizes for any size rims, as well as a tutorial on what all those numbers mean.
