Check the fluid. It usually tells all. Is it low? Is it burnt? Is it smelly? Does it sparkle?

So your saying that annoying failure to shift when expected is actually by design?

it means hes been stepping on it for acouple days and it adapted to it, but low rpm shifts should bring it back down

The adaptive shifting won't cause a lack of shift. It is really just a shift point map, but you can't go outside the stock maps without some form of ecu modification. If you are having trouble with a lack of shift I suspect that either airlinevomitbag is right and your fluid is low, or you put too much stress on the torque converter and it is damaged.
