Shift Problem(I want your expert inputs! :D)
Hi, usually when i go on the highway drive above 60 fora while my clutch gets (soft?) or easyier to press( i dont know the techneical terms this is my first manual car). But when i drive in the streets at 45ish it does fine. Anyway recently i drove on a highway, went to Barnes and Noble for a while. Got back in my car, and for some reason i had to thrust the shift into reversse, where normaly it slides in.
Then to go forward i had to push it really hard into first, and this whole time the clutch is presed down but seems alittle loose or softer than nomrmal. So i have a hard time geting into first if its stopped, and sometimes i dont. I need to mostly jam it into the gears. Other times if i'm driving if i bring it into nutral, place it over the gear i want it to go into, it somtimes lets it in.
NOw i've read the threads and looked at the stories, and it could be most likely that my pressure is low for fluid? - If this is the case then i WILL look at the thread on top. Other peopple have responded saying its the Slave drive or something like that. I personaally thought it was the clutch. I'm a high school student who is a very lucky person to have lancer as my first car, i dont drive bad at all, every now and then have a little high rev with a honda
So i was wondering what could be the problem? if its the fluid, i think the leak is to the left of the engine near the front headlights. Its a little wet there, but that could also be from belt dressing.
Thanks,
Dani

Took it to my dad's friend, he said the clutch was the problem because if you turned the car on and left it in gear with the clutch held down the car would still go foward.
So in conclusion they said that clutch died
So in conclusion they said that clutch died
Thats not a "clutch" thats A) Hydralic problem of the clutch system (leak, air in system etc etc) B) Throw-out bearing(or the fulcrum arm that moves it, the name escapes me now but make sure that pivots) C) Pressure Plate.
But if its B or C, you might as well throw in a new clutch while your in there
If a clutch "dies" it dies cause it loses all its friction material, it slips. a clutch doesent die and keep you going =p
Well then again, when you say clutch, i also assume you mean the clutch plate.
I'm pretty sure you cant even buy a throw-out bearing or pressure plate without it being in a kit with a clutch.
just figured I'd let ya know a lil ;-)

Wow your getting raped.
You can get a great aftermarket clutch kit for 350$ and an OEM one for even less.
And I would never pay more that 100$ for a slave or a master cylinder.
Just google those parts.

lol i calld the mechanic, hes a good friend, but he said he coudnt do the job, he was giving it to someone else.
So parts of it was Clutch kit: ~360
Master Slave- ~60
labor: 6 hours
=
~700

So youre telling me that youre supposed to pay someone 116$ an hour to work for six hours, when in reality it only takes about 2 hours if you take your time and not even the dealer would charge 116$ an hour. I think you need some new mechanic friends cuz these guys are trying to shove a pine tree up you ****.
sounds like you did your research by coming here and came up with an answer for him , and he relized that your not as stupid as you look, and so now he is feeding you bull****... i'd say do it yourself and learn some, and save a lot while your at it...
If you aren't looking at the clutch slave cylinder for maybe 20-30 dollars you are a fool..Unless you have been drag racing or cant drive a standard at all..Climb under the car a looks for the slave cylinder..it will have a rod that connects to the clutch arm...see if it wet, like it's leaking fluid.. replace it an bleed the system. Check inside your car as well and look at the rod coming thru the fire wall connecting the the clutch pedal..see if the rubber is wet or leaking ..if it is replace the cylinder...dont do the clutch unless you are sure you have abused it or cant drive and ride the clutch pedal...if so it on you.,..

I want to do it myself, but let me describe the problem again more accurately.
The clutch had no "grip" or stiffness. And when driving i had to push the shift knob into the gear, so if i was at 15mph, i would put it near 2nd, it would go ghzzzz and then let it into 2nd. same for 3rd and 4th. I think the clutch is dead. I went to pump the clutch but there was no leak, and the liquid did go through.
