Input shaft bearing help pls!

senate how did you find that bearing... when i search OEM parts all i can find is the complete transmission... i would like to get the other bearing on the other end of the input shaft also.... and maybe even the bearings on the secondary shaft

update: i looked at the manual i downloaded thanks to senate for the 234546 time and realized i was over looking a 56 page section that details the dissassembly of the tranny. after reading it i realized that you do not take that clip off until after the input shaft is removed. also it turns out there is a retainer "bracket" on the ISB that must be removed from the inside. to tear this baby apart you HAVE to set the tranny on the bell housing and follow the directions to lift the rest of the housing off of the bell housing... its actually quite easy when you know what your doing... now comes the hard part though, reassembly...

Splitting the case isn't a huge deal. It's pressing the gears off the shafts where you can get into trouble. Thankfully there is no need to do that. However, when replacing synchros, this becomes necessary and a shop press with the appropriate adapters is a must-have. Not recommended for a DIYer. The shafts are full of all sorts of select-fit shims, needle bearings, and keyed sleeves that require immense attention to detail to get it all back together properly.

yes this is true... it will be hard enough just putting bearings on the ends of the shafts and getting it back together....

and btw disappearingone, i guess i didnt understand what you meant by seal plug, and now i too am in search of one? did you ever find one? you have a part number on that senate?

thanks, this forum and especially the manual from senate saved me a ton of money... without it i may have ended up paying $800, because of a $12 bearing.... its great to have enough brains and especially the ***** to tear into something and save money, but it wouldnt be possible with out the great people on forums!

that clip comes off after the shaft is separated from the case.

There is a large black cap on the back of the case. pop that off with a screw driver there is the clip you need to open to allow the case to separate from the gear shafts.

The clip on the back is built into the case so you can only spread it and pull up on the casing. once the casing is off there is a plate at the base of the input shaft, take that off. Then tap the shaft lose from the front housing and remove the c-clamp in your photos.

guess i didnt need to post lol.

Yes i did find a new seal/plug thing. I would have to look for the receipt to find the part # but i got it from a local transmission shop for 12 bucks.

hmmm i dont know what kind of cities your guys live in but apparently mine sucks... i can find that seal plug anywhere.... you could probably be rich just reselling them... for the good of the forum, can you post up a part number of some sorts... im probably going to just goop mine back in but maybe the next guy will have a better chance of finding one

Ok so I stumbled across this forum because I have the same problem. I dont have the time or resources to do the job myself so I'm thinking about taking it somewhere. Everyone told me that its so labor intensive and that you're bound to break the other bearings. you're better off buying a junkyard transmission.

Is this true? I hate to swap trannies just for a $12 bearing. Please help me out.

Its not bad at all I have cracked open a couple transmissions and changed the ISB twice. I even did a write up of how to disassemble your tranmission

BTW dont buy the $12 bearing, buy it from Mitsu for like $40, you dont want to be tearing it open again in 6 months because you went cheap on the bearing.

for the record i didnt use a cheap bearing either, i managed to find a OEM bearing on ebay for $12. Also i never did find that plug i was talking about, i ended up getting a freeze plug (from a engine block) and putting some goop around the edge. Sealed good and still going strong after probably 60K miles. Soon i will be replacing valve seals tho, up to 214K miles now and smoking BAD.

Really, if you have a place to do it I'd recommend doing it yourself. Time wise it wasn't that bad, about 16 hours or so and, it was a learning experience for me. I had no almost 0 knowledge of working on transmission internals. All total I may of had 100 dollars in the job (not counting my time) and, the local tranny place wanted 800 just to get started. The cars been together for almost 3 years now and is still perfect.

Sounds about right and for experienced that time drops way down. Just under two hours to pull the transmission and maybe two more if that for disassemble and reassemble with the new bearing. Having a press at home helps too. Then wait a day for the sealant to cure and pop it back in
