Broken OZ rally Trans and clutch!

I have has a bad grinding noise coming from my tranny for a couple weeks now and i changed out the manual trans gear oil last week with royal purple 85w140. I took my car into mitsu and they wanted to know what kind i put it so i told em and they said t was too thick.... so now the manager has to talk with the regional manager to see what they should do... would that weight of gear oil neccessarily HURT the trans and make grinding noises???

I'm using the Royal Purple 75W-90 and have no issues. It also has the LSD additive in it so it suits me well also! No grinding issues here...

They're probably just trying to soak you for more money. Best of luck, though!

Did the grinding start before or after the change. If it startd before you might want to change back to the stock weight oil. Then when they say you said it was 85-140 or whatever just tell em you got the weights mixed up. If they do an oil sample to check they will see its still the stock weight. otherwise probally still switch back I think 85-140 is a little extreme.

85w-140? if i remember right, that's 85 weight at normal temp and 140 weight at hot engine temp making it thicker as your car warms up. 140 is a lot more than the 90 recommended when it's hot. can't really remember. too early in the morning...

some cars use engine oil as gear oil so viscosity is important.

I put the gear oil in after the harsh grinding started... it was completely unbearable so i had to try something... but no dice. Mitsu called and said they wouldnt know anything til monday so im out of a car for a couple more days... i took it in on thursday and i dont know when its gonna be done. The manager said he would try his best to get his regional manager to warranty the car...

wish me luck!

ill keep you guys posted...

thanks for all the good info

I dont think its feasible that the gear oil would make the grinding worse? is it? if anything it would make it hotter and harder to shift but i had no problems... plus the oil was in for a week before i took it in...

I sure hope they dont find my RRM piggyback hiding in the glove box!!!!
