Mind Of It's Own

a while back, i named my car christine... like the old stephen king book. so far, she has lived up to it. the latest, has been my tranny slip. i was going down 316 and car bangs into third, stays there (default gear, auto.), and throws a speed sensor code. most likely tranny slippage. i let it sit for a few nights, now she drives fine. also, my catalytic converter code that had been on... hmm... wont come back on now. anyone else had some odd random problems?

Sounds like the tranny is having issues. Is it under warranty? Have you had the ATF changed?

stygiosracing Aug 19, 2006 08:41 AM

yea, my tranny has been a little iffy. the atf is changed regularly, every 30k. as for warranty... mitsu says F*** OFF! (91k miles)

Did you constantly shift your auto tranny? You're a dead duck, impending failure.

If you constistantly change your ATF, it should have no problem. My LS coupe's tranny after 4 ATF changes (about 112K) still felt (wear and tear) like a 1.5 year old in 4 years of usage.

If you use 100% syth ATF, your tranny will hunt and peck through the gears a lot, especially always wanting to downshift. Otherwise, jack it up and pour another 7 qts of semi-syth ATF (feels better through each shift and last a lot longer than a reg ATF.

Do you guys change your ATF yourselves? If so, how difficult of a job is it?

03lancOZ Aug 20, 2006 12:43 PM

there's a how to on it... I personally have never done it, so I cannot help you out there...

Has anyone ever tried it?

I am thinking of doing it next weekend... If I do, I will keep you posted...

stygiosracing Aug 30, 2006 08:12 PM

yea, trannys fine... just the one incident. as for the cat.... lights back on. oh well. looks like ill be getting headers and a CEL.
Im a tech at toyota, so i do this stuff all the time. tranny fluid changes are easy. as long as you have a set of wrenches, and a drain pan, youre cool. although, lancer fluid likes to spray everywhere, so be weary.

Our auto tranny sucks:rant: . There are a lot of posts about them slipping on here and nobody has an answer or had much luck with the stealership warranty trying to get it fixed. Usually they "cannot reproduce the problem". Bastages!!! I think It might have something to do with the "learning" feature the tranny has, it probably has a glitch that they don't want to fix/recall. I have had the slipping problem a little here and there and it's true, it seems, that if you keep the tranny fluid fresh it doesn't act up as much, at least thats been my experience.

my car has just over 60k on it.

My tranny didn't fail on me but it started to give me trouble and it threw a CEL. After driving it and it slipping over and over at high speeds I finally got it checked out at a Tranny shop. They put their computers on it and every other thingamajig.

Comes down that the INPUT SPEED SENSOR went out on me. Cost me like 90 something at the dealer just the sensor, and I gave the guy 10 bucks for changing it and doing the diagnosis for me. Pop's friends.

So that fixed it? No other problems since? Mine does that slip occasionaly at low speeds and RPM's. Can that problem be diagnosed by a tranny shop without a CEL?

Wallesasuaz Aug 31, 2006 09:25 AM

my problem was this... the car would run fine through 1st all the way to 3rd automatic. but once i reached excess speeds of over 60 to hit 4th, it would pop and fall into 3rd and get stuck there. And when I would come to a full stop, the car wouldn't want to grab 1st properly til about 2500 rpms and then start moving slowly. I would have to shut the car off, and turn it back on so it would reboot itself. funny right? lol

Ever since, that did fix my problems. I don't have that slippage anymore. As for low RPM slippage that you're talking about, what does it feel like?
