Bad/Rough Idle Thread
Im tired of weeding through all these posts about bad idles when they all say the same thing:
Change your plugs
Changes your wires
Check your air filter
Check your o2 sensor
So what can be done after those things have been done. Whats the next step and where can I find resources to help me accomplish this next step. I need info that either nobody has or is willing to share. Chiltons doesnt make a manual for lancers. The only place I have found to get a repair book is the service manual from
and of course they want a hefty sum for it.
my next step was going to be checking the intake side for any vacuum leaks. which is hard to do if I dont have a diagram to find out what hose goes to what. so final question:
Does anyone have a copy of the service manual that would be willing to help me and fellow owners from this headache and heartache?

You most likely have a vacuum leak but if you did your check engine light would come on.
I had a vacuum leak, pulled up the code at Autozoo, and checked all my hoses. My throttle body gasket was bad so I replaced it.
Your MAF can also be bad since your idle is rough.

Ok so update:
Since Ive had some extra time today I hooked the codereader up and pulled the codes to see if it was throwing any new/different codes. Of course not. Just the "Warm Up Catalyst Below Threshold" which is the same code that it has been showing since I gutted the first cat. I know that is a common code when you install an aftermarket header.

UPDATE: so today while having one of the worst days ever, the car started to go into one of its tantrum modes. "NO! I dont wanna idle!" I digress. I get home, throw the scanner on it and viola. New Trouble code...P0172: System too rich (bank 1). Well DUH. Anyway, havent got a chance yet to try the carb cleaner/vacuum leak test yet, but it does sound feasable. I will let everyone know how it goes/went.
