Question Steering wheel volume and channel change control problems

I've done some checking and I see the other threads on problems with radio's and frequency issues, but nothing on what I'm dealing with.

My car is totally stock. Only thing I've done is window tinting. Almost ever since I got my car brand new in 07' when I use my volume and radio station changing controls on my steering wheel, they will work the opposite way. I'll press the button for the volume to go up and it will go down, I'll change the station to the next station up and it will do that, but then I'll press it to go another station further and it will go back to the first station (and back and forth if I keep pressing it). Same when I press the volume or station down. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Completely random. It'll happen maybe once a week or once every other week. In the morning or at night, if the car has just been started or I've been driving around for hours. If I go to the GPS head unit when this is happening and try to change the volume or station it works just fine. So I'm wondering if it's something with the wiring to the steering wheel controls? Anyone else dealing with this? I took it to the dealer but they said without being able to do it on command or knowing of some kind of consistancy, they can't know how to fix it.

Your steering wheel controls have just two wires going to your head unit. Each button when pressed have a different resistance so depending on what you command it to do, it will send a different voltage to the head unit.

If one of those resistors is not functioning correctly, then you will get what you are experiencing. This can be a bad switch, back clock spring, loose\corroded wiring, or even the head unit. Unless you are knowledgeable with advanced automotive electronics, then I would not attempt to troubleshoot.

What the dealer "should" do it remove the air bag on the steering wheel, test from the buttons to the head unit while wiggling the harness to see if they can recreate it.

For yourself, you can try duplicating this by turning the wheel while pressing buttons. If it does happen while turning, then it is your clock spring. Best of luck!

Yeah it happened again yesterday. I had been driving straight for about 3 miles and was still driving straight when it happened. The controls on the steering wheel started messing up and so I changed the volume on the head unit itself and that worked. I went back to the steering wheel and it still didn't work. After about 5 channel changes and 6 or so volume button presses, it went back to normal. Seems like noone else is having this problem. Next time I'm into the dealer I'll ask them if they can do that. Thanks for your help.

The wires at the head unit, are connector C-104 (20 pin connector) pins 22 (white) and 32 (Black) This is for the audio unit, not nav. With Nav, they are connector c-12 (32 pin connector) pin 53 (yellow with black) and pin 69 (black with red).

Hope this head unit of yours will actually work. I would be surprised.

Camshaft,

Thank you so much for yiur help. It actually works!!!

I have connected PIN #22 (blue gray) to the remote wire on the stereo and the PIN #32 (black gray) to the ground wire. I grounded it to one of the screw away from the stereo to prevent hissing when you rev the engine.

The stereo itself has the auto program feature for the steering wheel remote.

Again thank you for that very important info. I will post pics and video soon.

Do not connect PIN #32 (black gray - ground) to the ground wire of stereo main wire. If you do you, there is a possibility that you will the clicking thru speakers. You will hear the reving of the engine as well. The best thing to do is ground it away from the stereo with one of the existing screw or bolt.

Again, PIN #22 (blue gray) is a positive wire.

PIN #32 (black gray) is a negative wire and must be grounded to the chassis.
