Amp install - volume doesnt effect subs

Hi, I installed an extra amp to power additional subs using the technique found in the how to. I used a soche hilevel to low level converter and everything works BUT when I turn the volume down, it doesnt alter the volume of the subs at all. What did I do wron? Or is that just how it is?

Is it music (sound) or just rythmic movement of the cones (spurious signal)?

How loud?

Does it do it with the radio off? Then stop if engine off?
