New timing belt, car now makes nosies
 

I did a search and couldn't find any mention of something similar to this, so here goes.

I recently had the 60,000 mile maintenance done on my car (which is at ~56,000) and as such they changed out the timing belt as well. Now this was not the local Mitsubishi dealership that did the work, but I have gone to the mechanic that did the work before and he does good work. Anyway, after the timing belt was replaced I heard a "wrrrring" noise coming from the new belt when ever I start the car or accelerate - there is no noise when idling. The mechanic said that this is normal and should go away within a few days of getting the new belt, but I just wanted to confirm this with other Lancer owners.

maybe the belt is rubing the plastic cover that "covers" the t belt? And only under accelerationw hen it spins faster? maybe its just not tight enough...id get the guy to take a look at it again.

Or maybe an engine mount?

Nope, it's just the belt and what it is made up of... I did a timing belt replacement on my old Escort and Advance Auto hooked me up with a lifetime free replacement belt that was made out of kelvar or something. The guy said that it'll sound like I have a supercharger on it... LOL. Well, he was right! The belt makes that noise; and if you've never heard a SC'd car before, it sound close to what you described.

check out your other belts as well, both your belts have to be removed to get to the timing belt.

i didn't notice any differences in sound when my friend and i changed my timing belt.

Well, here's a small update - on the drive home from work tonight the alternator belt slipped and caused horrible sounds to issue from the engine. Nothing was damaged and it took all of five minutes to fix, but that is partly what was causing some of the noise. Once that was fixed things aren't as bad - there is still a "wrrring" when the engine speeds up, but nothing significant - I heard the noise before the belt was replaced due to the cold (currently single digits) weather.

Well, could be worn bearings caused by the belt not being tight or too tight?

Might be rubbing, (which i doubt) easy to check, just take the tbelt cover and inspect it inside, something is either too tight or lose.

I would take the car to mechanic and inspect it asap, since they did the work.

dude i went through the exact same thing...did they replace the tensioner? if not then you might want to get that looked into. i had my waterpump, belt, and rrm pulley installed and mine had the wannabe supercharger sound for a whole while and they said it would go away once the belt hand been "broken in" but it didnt so the mechanic said it was probably the tensioner and...low n behold it was! i forgot how much it costs tho...hope it works out for ya {thumbup}

Hey, I just ran across something in my Mitsubishi service manual that sounded kind of like the noise issue you mentioned. It suggested that if your engine is making an abnormal chattering noise that starts when you start your engine and changes with changing engine speed, it could be malfunctioning lash adjusters. Now, that's the first time I've even heard of a lash adjuster, so I don't really know any more than that, but I copied the information that I found, and it's in the attached pdf file. Hey, I don't know... maybe it will be useful to someone.

The lash adjusters are in the valve train (actually they are in the end of the rocker arms, between the rocker and the valve, and they are supposed to eliminate the gap between the rocker and the valve so the rocker rolls on the cam smoothly). The chatter that they mentioned is more of a ticking sound ("clakity,clakity") and changes speed with engine speed. Sometimes this will happen when the engine is cold in the winter too, but goes away after a couple of seconds.

Well, this is a bit of an old thread, but as I wasn't able to post the resolution...

Anyway, the problem ended up being a combination of the belt not being tight enough and cold weather. There is still a bit of noise when I start the on a colder morning, but nothing like before. Bottom line - it was likely related to the fact that the belt was not tight enough.

Tensioner related then, like someone speculated.

The timing belt is over tensioned that would be my guess without hearing it!
